| Sweet Charity: The Synopsis
Charity Hope Valentine (Ron Megee), Fandango Room "social consultant" (who has all his boyfriends’ numbers tattooed on his arm), looks for love in all the wrong places, starting with Charlie Dark Glasses (new-comer Charles Fugate) who steals Charity’s money and pushes him into a lake. Consoled by his friends (Nickie-Missy Koonce, Helene-Shaun Roberts, Carmen-DeDe Deville, Cecil-C. Ray Ettinger, Rosie-Miss Victoria Barbee and Frenchy-Ron Arens), Charity decides he will not be hurt again. Naturally, Charity soon falls into the arms of baseball star Georgio Brettorio (Charles Fugate) who has just had a lovers’ quarrel. Georgio takes Charity back to his "pad," but Georgio re-unites with his girlfriend Ursula (Meshe l. Cook) while Charity is in the closet (literally – not metaphorically). In an attempt to find culture and refinement, Charity (in his infinite wisdom) goes to the YMCA, where he is stuck in an elevator with claustrophobic accountant Oscar (Charles Fugate). Upon their escape, Oscar invites Charity to a meeting at the Rhythm of Life church, which is the church of the month, headed by the Reverend "Big" Daddy Brubeck (Missy Koonce, ah, there’s a Late Night moment). "For a weirdo," Charity determines, "Oscar is quite nice." Charity and Oscar’s relationship progresses to the point of a lifetime commitment until Oscar decides he cannot deal with Charity’s past relationships and backs out of a legal partnership ceremony in Vermont. The show ends on a hopeful note, though, at least Charity didn’t get tattooed again. |
