..WHAT IS NATURAL MEAT? In order to combat disease, insects and weeds in a high production environment most farmers use a wide range of medicated feds, pesticids and herbicides in very heavy quanities. Many animals are feed growth harmones and antibiotics on a regular schedule. Unfortunately these chemicals pass up the food chain to the consumer. Naturally raised animals are fed on wholesome food and have been give no routine drugs or chemicals. Nor hor they housed for indefinite periods in crowded pens or enclosures. Lambs and calves are left with their mothers to be weaned naturally. They graze on pastures that have had no artificial fertilzers or chemicals. *****************************************************************************************************************WHAT IS COMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE? CSA provides safe products produced with the individual member in mind. The consumer and the farmer are partners int he production of the produce or animal. The animal belongs to the consumer and is raised by the farmer according to the CSA member's individual requirements as well as providing the member with their choice of cuts of meat. In the case of a large animal like a beef members may shair ownership with others. In all cases Allen Family Farms will maintain our standards and avoid the use of drugs and chemicals. Production is kept small so attention can be paid to the individual member's requirements. If a disaster happens the member and the farmer share in the loss. ****************************************************************************************************************WHY ISN'S NATURAL MEAT LESS EXPENSIVE THAN "FACTORY GROWN" MEAT? Modern intensive farming techniques have been developed because the chemicals, harmones, antibiotics, etc. allows animals to producted in a factory enviornment in a shorter period of time. This increases the production and the profit. Note chicken and pig houses and cattle feedlots. To farm naturally requires lowering production levels resulting in lower income per animal or pound of produce. So although natural or organic famers use fewer imputs, and save some money. They also miss out on the greater production levels. In order to remain vinancially viable , organic and natural farmers must receive a reasonable premium for their product.********************************************************************************************************WHAT ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE? All animals reaised on Allen Family Farm are reared to the highest standards of animal welfare. The animals are not subjected to a feed lot type of environment nor enclosed in over grazed fields. Calves and lambs ae naturally weaned by their mothers. They are slaughtered by a small USDA inspected packing house in the most humane method possible without being subjected to a stressful and frightening shipment.*******************************************************************************************************WHAT ABOUT SAFETY? Our meat is free from all routine drugs, growth promoters, animal ofel, genetically modified foodstuffs and other additives. Animals are slaughtered and packed by a UADA inspected packing house. If shipped, the meat is quick frozen and packed in dry ice. As our cattle are grass fed and not feedlot raised there is generally less cholesterol due to less fat in the meat. Goat naturally has very little fat and very low cholesterol. However, the meat is not trimed by the packer and should be trimmed bedfore use. ****************************************************************************************************************HOW TO ORDER: Sheep and goats are $100.00 live, which figures to about $2.00 a pound packaged. Cattle are $1200.00 which is again about $2.00 a pound packaged if the beef weighs 1000 lb live. Steers weigh about 1000 lbs at 12 months but can be held as late as 18 months which will add another 800 to 1000 lbs of live weight and bring the cost of the meat down - but the animal is a bit older. Beef can be owned whole or you may buy 1/4 share in an animal. We will work out payments if you desire. At processing time you order the number and type of cuts you desire in each package. You may pick it up. We will deliver for a small fee if you are within a day's drive, or we will package it and ship it in dry ice, you pay for packaging and shipping.
