To achieve that goal, Clint, Bob Dave and Scott recently recorded five new songs with Glen Ballard, the man who put the angst in Alanis.
"They (new songs) are more alternative, like I’ll Be There For You with more distortion. It’s still pop rock music, but it’s more appealing tot the adults and guys," says Clint, one of the 15-year old Moffatt Triplets.
Even though the Victoria, B.C., natives requested to work with Ballard, Clint admits he was slightly leery about working with the producer. "We thought he was going to have an ego the size of his house. And we walked inside and the first thing we saw was five Grammys," says Clint.
"But he was the most down-to-earth guy. He was so polite. He would ask, ‘Can you please do this? Would it hurt you to play this?’ It was unbelievable. It was a great learning experience. He’ll probably produce our next album."
This is not the first time The Moffatts have mutated their sound. They started off as a country band and even moved to Nashville before going pop with Chapter 1:A New Beginning.
On June 8, The Moffatts will release the American version of Chapter 1 featuring the five new "edgier" songs recorded with Ballard. Clint expects it will be available in Canada as well.
But you won’t have to wait another two months to hear The Moffatts’ edgier sound. Until You Loved Me should start getting radio airplay next week, according to Clint. It’s also the soundtrack of the new Drew Barrymore film, Never Been Kissed.
Some fans might argue that the brothers are greedy, if not lazy, to simply repackage Chapter 1 instead of recording an entirely new album. But Clint thinks the revamped Chapter 1 is "pretty much a new album." In addition to the five new songs produced by Glen Ballard, five of the original songs were remixed by Lord Tom-Alge. Plus there’s new artwork, photos, "new everything," says Clint.
Whether The Moffatts are motivated by money is debatable, but they’re certainly not lazy. The brothers are always on the road. In the last month, they’ve performed at the Junos, MuchMusic’s Snow Job and kicked off their Canadian tour. In that time, The Moffatts had two days off for Scott’s 16th birthday. To celebrate, they went to Banff for some skiing.
"Our manager wanted to buy him a car when we said: ‘Are you crazy?’ He doesn’t know how to drive. He’s actually learning on the computer. He passed his first thing and now, he’s like ruining the cars," laughs Clint.
After their Canadian tour, the brothers are heading south to do a series of school shows in the Eastern U.S. and then to Europe.
Clint says he can’t wait to take a break. "We’re looking for a vacation. We’re looking for places that have everything-golf courses, scuba diving, all that stuff," he says. "We’ve found some places, we just don’t know when we’ll make time for them!
