Cybug Review

This is the modified cybug that I built

The cybug is a small robot, designed to act like a bug. It can be built to be either phototropic (attracted to light) or photophobic (afraid of light). There is an add-on for the robot that measures the battery power, and when fully charged it is photophobic and when the battery power drops it is attracted to light and goes to it's feeding (charging) station.

While this is an fun little bot it could use some improvement. For instance it would be nice if it had an on/off switch, because it gets rather annoying to have to pick up the robot and disconect the battery. In the picture of my modified version you can see I added a switch.

The kit comes with good instructions, especially for beginning roboticists, because it teaches the fundamental of soldering, the resistor color code, and how to identify the other parts. The instructions also have a section on theory, about what each part does, and how it is used in the circuit. A big plus for people that don't know a lot about electronics! The instructions also have a section giving pointers about how to build a feeding station to recharge the cybug's energy source (the battery is replaced with a large capacitor).

Overall this is a good beginners robot, but it is also fun for advanced users to experiment with. It has two add-ons available: Predator/Prey add-on and a hunger instinct add-on. Both of the add-ons come as kits. The Predator/Prey add-on however requires two or more cybugs. This add-on makes one of the cybugs a predator and the other the prey. The predator then seeks out the prey and steals power from the prey's power source.
