Paul Walker interview with Big Hit!
What's in your
fridge at home?
Uh ... nothing. (laughs) Beer.
What would be the first
you'd grab from your house if it was burning down?
Mmm. I don't know probably something that is irreplaceable. Probably my photo
albums.
What colour is your
toothbrush?
Oh. Everything ... I like charcoal, like charcoal grey. I have to have
everything charcoal grey. My cars are charcoal grey. I love the bathrooms here
(points to the bathroom of the hotel that has a tiny row of grey) because they
have this charcoal grey tile. I think it's awesome. So, my toothbrush matches
that .. (points to his clothing) it matches my pants!
Of all of the people who
know you, who knows you best?
That's a good question. I don't know. Probably just about any one of my buddies,
you know. It's so funny, in my experience, I've had several extended
relationships, like that have gone over years and years and years. I don't think
it matters how long you spend with a girl, just because girls don't think like
guys do, there's differences there, I don't think a girl will every get me as
well as the guys do, that I've grown up with. You know what I mean? That's just
what I think. Then again, we've known each other since we were two years old, so
that's a lot. Probably my brother. I'd say my brother. He's 25 in October.
What's the most-dialled
number on your mobile?
My girlfriend.
What do you order at
McDonald's?
A Double Quarter-Pounder with cheese. Two of them, usually.
How do you know when you're
in trouble with your parents?
"Paul Four!" That's it. That's my mom anyways. That's how I know she's pissed.
I'm Paul William Walker IV and so "Paul Four" means there's hell to pay! Run out
the back door!
What can't you leave home
without?
It's sad to say, but my cell phone. It's miserable. It really bothers me and you
know what's so bad? A few years ago, like, I didn't even have one and now it's
ridiculous. It's a joke. It's really sad.
What's in your CD player at
the moment?
I've been listening to a lot of, I don't know if [former surfer and now rock
star] Jack Johnson is popular here? He's kind of like folky, acoustic, like surf
music. I've been listening to lot of Ben Harper this trip. David Grey, Dave
Matthews, Travis. A lot of the more alternative popular bands right now is what
I listen to. I don't listen to too much hip-hop or rap or that sort of thing. I
listen to a lot of classic rock like Jimi Hendrix, I love Edie Brickell and The
New Bohemians.
Do you keep in contact with
any of your past co-stars?
Yeah. Scotty Cann [Paul's co-star in Varsity Blues]. He's really cool. Josh
Jackson. I like him. They're really the only two. And Leelee. I talk to Leelee
Sobieski all the time. It's like any job. You find a few that you really like.
I've worked with quite a few people now but they're my favourites. They're
awesome. They're just real people.
Describe a few of your
following co-stars in a sentence:
* Reese Witherspoon (Pleasantville): That was a long time ago. I don't really
know. She's a different person now, I'm sure. I was terrified during that movie.
It was the first big movie that I'd worked on so I wasn't really myself either.
I was kind of quiet and kept to myself the whole shoot.
* Freddie Prinze Jr (She's All That): He's cool. We get along. We don't really
have much in common but I like him.
* Rachael Leigh Cook (She's All That): She's cool. When we worked together the
first time we never really talked much. She was pretty quiet. But we hung out
just this last spring break and we did some MTV stuff at Cancun [Mexico] and I
like her. She's really sweet. She's smart. She's quiet.
* James Van Der Beek (Varsity Blues): Ehh. (pauses) That's my sentence. That's
it. Ehh.
* Josh Jackson (The Skulls): Just real. Cool. He's just like a regular guy. He's
into camping, hanging outside and drinking beers. Loves his dogs. He's awesome.
* Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious): I like him. It took us a while.
Initally we did a little (punches his fists together). I felt this, I don't know
if he did. Just because I think we come from different places. You know, he's
from the East Coast and I'm from the West Coast and I never really knew anybody
like him growing up, so it took a while to feel each other out. I totally
respect him and he's cool.
* Leelee Sobieski (Joyride): I love her. She's awesome. She's super-smart,
super-sweet, she's got a big heart. Just real genuine.
Something people don't know
about me is ...
One thing I tell people and I don't know if they're surprised if that I'm really
into pottery. Like, I did a class in high school.
Is this because you saw
Ghost one too many times?
(Laughs). Right! (starts to sing) Oh my love ... No, I just dig it. It's cool.
You've got to spin it manually with your foot and I dig it. Like, I made my own
pots and bowls, and everything I use at my house, I made them. They match for
the most part. There are some irregularities but ... (laughs) I don't know. I
love doing that.
If I won an Oscar, my
speech would be ...
"Fools!" (laughs) No, I don't know what it would be. "Right on. Thanks a lot."
If I was in trouble, the
first person I'd call would be ...
One of my buddies.
If I could pick a leading
lady for my character to kiss, I would pick ...
[French actress] Sophie Marceau. She's outta control.
Do you ever get mistaken
for anybody else?
I've never been mistaken for anybody else. I don't get recognised often. Back
home. Yeah. Ever since The Fast and the Furious has come and it's done as well
as it has. But, it's still pretty mellow and manageable. It's at a perfect level
I think. Occasionally you get irritated. I think, like anybody would. You're
sitting down, like sitting down with your girlfriend and we're having dinner and
you've got people coming up to you to get an autograph and it's like, "Maybe
later".
What do they mostly ask you?
Well, girls want to know if I have a girlfriend and guys want to know how many
girls you get! They ask about cars, too. I think people are fascinated with it.
It's like I don't get it just because I do it. It's funny, I was more than
starstruck when I met [US basket-ballers] Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal and I
was like, "Wow." I was actually with [best bud] Chad and I go, "Dude, I can't
believe it. I just met Shaq and Kobe" and he said, "Yeah? You want to know
what's even a bigger trip?" And I was like, "What's that?" He's all, "That's how
some people feel when they meet you." I was like, "Wow, I guess you're right.
That's kind of put it in perspective.
Who's the most famous
person you've ever met?
Shaq and Kobe. Shaw, he's quite possibly the coolest guy alive. You know how
celebrities do these stunts all the time that are in the name of good will? He's
so awesome. A lot of my friends work the studios as grips or laborers and a
friend of mine was working a commercial with Shaq in Downton LA. Bad area and,
of course, all the kids come out of the woodwork 'cos they want to see Shaquille
O'Neal. Shaq walks by his assistant and he gives his credit card and he goes,
"30 grand in toys at Toys 'R' Us and I want it in the back and I want it here at
lunch." Just like that. So the guys goes there and he didn't buy, like,
Teletubbies, he bought PlayStations and the coolest stuff. Shaq went over there,
didn't tell anybody and then at lunch and he handed it all out. That's what he
did with his lunch. I think that's so dope. That's awesome.
