In this lesson we will learn the phonetic structure of Serbo-Croat.

We will start with the easiest portion the vowels:

A...is always like the 'a' in the word father.

E...is the same sound as the ay in day.

I...is pronounced as in the word machine.

O...is pronounced as in the word No.

U...is pronounced with the same sound as the oo in book.

In this next section we will begin to learn the consonents used in Serbo-Croat or as you would say in Belgrade srpsohrvatski.
We will start with consonents that are different than in english or that have no english conterpart.

C...is always pronounced as a ts sound as in cats.

Č...is pronounced like the ch in church.

Ć...is pronounced as a soft ch sound almost as ty sound.

Đ...is pronounced like an english J.

Š...is like the sh in shine.

J...is pronounced like a y.

Ž...is pronounced like a zh or the j in the french jour.

please note that the above list is only an approximation of the native sounds used in the serbo-croat language.
