I live in SW Minneapolis. My office is in South Minneapolis.

Name of spouse/partner:
I’m married to Jeff Hunsberger, who also went to Marshall-U. We didn’t
spend much time together in HS but have been together now for 28 years,
married for 25. We’re really lucky because we both feel like we each
got the better deal. He’s great and I am very fortunate.

We have both been in recovery for 27 years now.

Children and Pets (number, type, names, ages):
Children; Miles 23, Maliq 10. We had a son Josh who died when he was
14, he would be 29 this year. We have a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
named Otis. So glad the gerbil has gone now to that great Gerbil cage
in the sky.

Something memorable/highlights about your days or years at Marshall-U
High:
I was most affected by 8th grade and all the struggles of merging kids
from 3 different schools. Because I had friends from each school, I
got an interesting perspective on the situation. I learned a lot that
year about what works and what doesn’t work about bringing people
together.

After the train accident I was in at the end of that year I got a great
deal of support from lots of people. All that support ultimately made
me a kinder person. It took me awhile to pull things together after my
accident. My whole life changed in a split second that day, and
frankly they weren’t changes that I wanted. Thankfully, I was much
more able to make peace with myself when I was in my 20’s.

I didn’t spend much time in classes after eighth grade, ended up
spending my senior year at The Free School so I could graduate. Odd
that it never occurred to me that I couldn’t go to college after
missing all those years in HS, a good use of grandiosity. I really liked
the power and drama of adolescence. Everything was so important, every
exchange so meaningful, beliefs and truths so clear. I had a lot of
fun those years amidst the chaos and the angst. Hitchhiking across the
country when I was 15, not wise but definitely exciting. Hanging out
at Sandy’s, The Bridge, Valli Pizza, Jose’s, and participating in all
the anti-war protests.

What have you been doing since then?
I had my first child when I was 19 and then attended the U of M for
both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in clinical Social Work.
(Contrary to my high school record, I graduated Magna Cum Laude.) I
had my second child right before starting Graduate School, and my third
child when I was 37. I worked in chemical dependency treatment through
college and have been a Psychotherapist and Organizational Consultant
in private practice since 1980. I love my work and am still intrigued
by it.

Other interesting things about yourself that you’d like us to know:
I started running at age 40, (read mid-life crisis) and ran my first
marathon that same year. I started competing for the US Disabled Team
in track when I was 42, and made the US Paralympic Team and represented
the USA in Sydney in 2000. At 45, I was the age of most of my
competitor’s mothers. I am, at this moment anyway, still holding some
World Records and have started competing in Triathlon this year. I
will try to qualify for the World Triathlon Championships which will be
held in New Zealand this December. My first attempt at officially
qualifying for the Olympic distance will be the morning after our
reunion. The timing isn’t great but the Worlds are in December so I
need to get it done. I have had a great time with all of this, have
been able to compete all over the world, meet really interesting folks
and support lots of other people to pursue their dreams. It doesn’t really get much better than that.
