Max and Figarro, two cats, Max is older and wise, Figarro is young and active and pretty dumb. Something memorable/highlights about your days or years at Marshall-U High: I studied hard and got good grades in High School. I had a close circle of friends, and knew a wider group of students less well. I didn’t participate in many school activities or get very involved in war protests, drug use, parties, or some of the other common things that people did back then. If I had to do it all over again, I would put less emphasis on academics and more on social and recreational activities. My kids seem to be striking a good balance. My MU experience was pretty good, but I sense it could have been better in many ways. What have you been doing since then? I entered
the Army right out of High School, serving three years stationed at
the Pentagon doing computer operations. This was a fun period of my
life, being away from home, in a new place, with few expenses or responsibilities. Part way into my University experience I took a part-time job at the University, doing computer programming. At some point I switched from being full-time student and part-time worker to being part-time student and full-time worker. I lived in Minneapolis and St. Paul during this period, switching back and forth, it seems, with each move. In 1982 I met my wife, Melissa, when she responded to an ad I placed in the Twin Cities Reader. We got married in 1983 and will be celebrating our 20th anniversary later this year. I left the University to take a job in computer quality assurance with B. Dalton booksellers, at their corporate headquarters. When B. Dalton was sold to Barnes and Noble, I took a job with IDS/American Express Financial Advisors at their headquarters in downtown Minneapolis in computer capacity planning. I’ve been with American Express for more than 15 years, doing computer programming and different kinds of analysis in several different jobs. I’m currently in the Retail Marketing department, providing technical support to the folks who distribute leads to Advisors.
Other interesting things about yourself that you’d like us to know: A few years ago I developed an interest in genealogy. I’ve put together a family tree that has grown impressively. I self-published two books that show what I’ve learned, for distribution to family and friends. My current goal is to re-visit things I think I know and collect evidence that substantiates it all (like birth certificates and such).
I started and ran for a few years a private software company. I wrote and marketed a package called Midwife StatCatcher, designed to help nurse-midwife practices collect and analyze information about their patients and their treatments and outcomes. It was more community service than business success, but it kept me out of trouble for a while. For a while Health Partners and several other Twin Cities practices were using it.
In 1985
I developed Type 1 (insuilin dependent) diabetes. I live a pretty
fit lifestyle and use an insulin pump. |
