A child so silent

With eyes wide and bright

Wonders why his mommy

Is crying with fright

And there's that sweet little girl

With the soft little curls

Always alone

With nobody home

To tell her "I love you"

And hold her tight as she cries.

The world isn't always grand

So often nobody gives a damn

Fend for yourself, then take the blame

Work your life out, then they claim the fame

And you're left, out in the cold, again...

That lonely woman

With tears in her eyes

Cries in the dark because he's gone again

She lays on the bed

Curled up in a ball

Afraid if she moves, he'll come down the hall

And find her again

Stench of gin on his breath

An excuse for him to cause her pain

The world isn't always grand

So often nobody gives a damn

Fend for yourself, then take the blame

Work your life out, then they claim the fame

And you're left, out in the cold, again...

Mommy's on heroin

And daddy's with his favorite sin

Brother's on his dope again

And sister needs the first-aid kit

To fix the pain from her man

Who reminds her so much, of her own dad

Escaping into your own little world

Getting yourself out of the deadly storm

And into a life where you're happy

The world isn't always grand

So often nobody gives a damn

Fend for yourself, then take the blame

Work your life out, then they claim the fame

And you're left, out in the cold, again.
