July 31,2566.
Earth.
The news-screen blared on in the background as Captain Lan Henricksen stared up at the ceiling.
'When completed, the Krios station will be the largest station ever built..'
"OFF!" he yelled at the screen. Lying in bed for the past few days, recovering from the nasty injury on the head he had recieved fighting off a Dalek scoutship.
Falling back into a self-induced sleep,he was startled when the buzzer rang hours later.
He pulled a shirt over his head and went to the door.
"Who is it?" he mumbled groggily. He opened the door.
"Sir." the marine snapped to attention. "I've been ordered to bring you to Earth Central headquarters."
"At ease, Sargeant." the marine stepped into a ready position. "Let me finish getting dressed and we can go."
"Very well,Sir."
"Do you have any idea what I'm being brought in for?" Lan asked.
"No Sir,I don't know."
Lan leaned back and felt the acceleration of the air-car as it sped off into the bright, blue sky.
Midway into the acceleration process, the air-car shuddered as if it had been hit by something.
"Sir,please hold on."
"What's happened?"
"The vehicle has been shot at... Sir."
"I'd just like to know why someone decided to open fire at me on my way here!"
"Good morning to you too,Lan." replied the Admiral.
"Well?" Lan glared at Grayson.
"Your next assignment."
"What?" Lan asked. "Next assignment? I expected to be back behind the helm on the Achilles... She's almost done being re-fitted..."
The Admiral raised his hand. "We need you for something bigger.. Something much bigger in fact."
"Bigger than commanding an cruiser against the Daleks?" Lan's eyes widened.
"Yes,Lan," the Admiral nodded. "You're going to Krios."
Lan's jaw dropped. The Admiral continued.. "I'm jealous. They want a human to run the station. Something about our quick adaptability. Your name was top of the list."
"But I fight Daleks. I know how to blow things up,not hold them together." Lan protested.
The Admiral raised his hand. "Regardless, the Senate's made up its mind. They want you there."
Lan sighed. "You see Lan," the Admiral continued, "it's a powder keg out there.. Dalek agents behind every corner. We need this. We need to show the rest of the galaxy that we're not going to take this sitting down. Ever since Heaven,we've been trying to get something like this going. It's all up to you, Lan.."
"And the other races want me to run this station?' the Admiral nodded.
"The Draconians asked for you by name. Apparently, news of your little maneuver at Alpha Canaris has been circulated a bit." the Admiral moved over next to Lan. "It'll be tough, but Earth Central has faith in you."
"Anyways, you'll have plenty of help. I've heard they got a Gridon for your first officer. She comes well recommended."
Lan stared up at the Moon floating in the sky.
"For a long time, man has looked up into the sky and asked himself, am I alone? Am I all there is in the universe?" said the Admiral. "And then, when the answer came,we found out we didn't understand the question."
"We didn't understand the question?" Lan asked.
The Admiral nodded. "Because the answer came in a form we didn't understand. It was Babel all over again."
"Babel?" Lan asked.
"It's a reference to a story about a city where everyone began to talk in different languages at each other spontaneously..I never really understood it til now. We're building on the ruins of Babel and making it something that can bind us together for the future.. and we want to be there at the beginning.. We want you there,Lan.."
Lan heaved a heavy sigh. He thought long and hard.
"I accept." he shook the Admiral's hand.
