"Starbase vs Starship"
When she was reassigned to Starbase Alexandria about a year and a half ago, she had been totally bombarded with new things, new thoughts,s and a totally new way of doing things. This place was too big to have one of the doctors do inventory of all the supplies. Now they had Senior techs who did the inventories. The Doctors would basically only collect the inventories from the different areas and then compile that. Then as the CMO, J'zy would take a look at the final report and compare it with the final report of the items that had been used. Actually she just had the computer do this, it could do it much faster and much more accurately. She just had to take a look at the computer output and make sure things added up before sending them off to Starfleet medical.
As far as the patient care went, that was different as well. On the Lexington, J'zy got to know most of the crew. She knew who didn't like coming in to sickbay and who didn't mind. She even knew the crew that never came into sickbay unless they were ordered to for a physical. On Starbase Alexandria she didn't even have a chance at that. There were over 100,000 Crew members, Officer and Enlisted. No way could J'zy really know that many, she'd be lucky if she could put a face to a name for even 1/10 of them.
The young doctor did feel she was lucky that she was also incharge of the Atlantis sickbay. She would be able to go off on missions and get to know a majority of the crew on that ship. This would at least make her feel more like a part of a community, rather then just a member who most hated going to.
Patient care differed in another way as well. Instead of being like a small town doctor who took care of everyone, J'zy was now more like a doctor at a Metropolitan Hospital. She saw a very limited amount of patients. Those she did see, were the ones on the Atlantis mostly. On the Starbase, Crew members and Civilians had individual doctors who they choose to go see. Those doctors would be responsible for keeping up the physicals on the Crew members, and giving reports. Then there were the surgeons and other specialists that the starbase employed. If a patient needed surgery, even emergency surgery, one of the staff surgeons would most likely be doing the surgery.
J'zy's real job on the starbase was organization and administration of this place. She had 4 different sickbays, albeit, only one main medical unit and 3 auxilary units, but they were huge. The number of staff she had under her would rival the number of personel assigned to alot of starships. The main medical unit was located in a central position to most of the starbase. It comprised of two floors, with different units on each floor. The main floor had the main patient care area. This area was designed mostly for walk in cases, those who injured themselves doing something (usually something stupid) or those who couldn't wait to schedule an appointment with their regular doctor, or those who didn't have a regular doctor but just weren't feeling well. Also on the main floor were the surgery units, the critical care unit, the CMO's office, and storage.
On the second floor were all the labs, most of which were used for research, there were also the doctor's offices from those who made appointments. Of course, the top floor had it's own storage unit, mainly because of the labs.
J'zy missed doing the hands on patient care. She still did some patient care on the starbase, but very little. She started to wonder if she could get a EMH to do some of this admin stuff for her so that she could get more time to work with the patients. Whenever there was a mission that required the Atlantis, J'zy never missed a beat with assigning one of the other doctors to take care of the starbase while she went off and had some fun.
As she walked into the Main Medical Unit, she looked around. "Where's Dr. Vreta?"
"I think he's in the back with a patient Doctor. Is there anything I can help you with Sir?" A voice called out behind her.
Turning she saw a young female nurse. Trying hard to remember the nurses name, J'zy hesitated. "Just let me Verta know when he's done that I need to talk to him asap." She smiled and then headed off towards her office.
"Yes Sir. Looks like he's done now. I'll have him meet you in your office."
J'zy only nodded over her shoulder to the ensign as she entered her office. She was joined a few seconds later by the hansome young doctor.
"You wished to see me Sir?"
"Yes, the Atlantis is being deployed. Doctor Caine and Myself will be going with it. I am leaving you incharge of the Starbase until our return. The inventory has been completed, and the computer has just finished compling the data. I will need you to take a quick look over it and make sure everything is accurate and as it should be." She picked up a PADD off her desk. "Here is a list of personel who are in need of a physical. I have already contacted a few of them, they are marked. Please send out reminders to the personel, to have them schedule an appointment. The rest of the Admin stuff is done with for today, and . . . well, you should know the routine of this by now. Do you have any questions Lt.?"
"No Sir." He said in a very serious tone, having shown no emotion while she was talking. Then a smirk crossed his face as he got informal with her, "so where are you off to this time J'zy?"
J'zryn chuckled and then said sarcastically, "where else? Off to save the Universe. If that's all Hans, I need to pack and make sure everything is ready on the Atlantis. Aww... the Administrators job is never done."
He laughed at that, "Well, while you're out, you'll have some fun. Just, don't injure too many of the crew while you're out. I know you are looking for some patient care to do, but releasing a biological agent into the air duct just isn't the right way to go about it." Hans tried to say all that with a straight face, but he couldn't make it. A smirk had crossed his face when he started talking about the bio agent.
Laughing, J'z responded, "I do want patient care, but not THAT much. I'll just release the agent into a couple of random quarters. That way no connection can be found." She winked and stood up, she would honestly never hurt any of her crew, but both she and Hans enjoyed teasing each other. Quitly she added as she walked past Hans, "A laugh a day keeps the shrinks away." He just laughed at that as he went back to work.
THE END
by J'zryn McCorvich
J'zryn left the conference room. She had been the CMO of this starbase for only a month now, and had never really realized how much work there was to do. When she had been on the Lexington things were really simply straight forth, Patient comes in, treat patient, file report, do follow-ups. Every once in a while you'd get to do a physical for a crew member, but that really didn't happen very much. Then there was the inventory which she would help out with, only becuase it got her aquainted with where things where and how much of things were normally stored.
