I`m jest an ole` drifter
and I`m kinda dusty...
an ole` no nothin mister..
and gettin sorta rusty
I wuzz born in Nort-dekoter
when bout four was my age
they took me ta Minnie-snowder
thats where I wuzz raised
Spent bout 13 years there
a figurin out the ways
day`dreamin how to leave there
when I finished my high school daze
Then I figured maybe
to start my days of driftin
I ought ta join the Navy
and the thought was rather liftin
There I spent a hitch or two
and traveled far and wide
then I got an itch`n in my shoes
and day`dreamed bout what next might I do
Drivin truck looked good on the menu
so round the country I could ride
from the midwest plains thru mountain views
to catch the sounds of the oceans tide
One thing that always rings true
Im a drifter and I`m dusty
Thru the years I met a lot of girls
were a few that made me lusty
specially those with long dark curls
brown eyes and sorta busty
lifes tests I`ve failed in many ways
soon I`ll be a burnt out ember
with my driftin day`dreamin ways
no one will anything of me remember
I`m a drifter and I`m dusty
and am gettin extra rusty
Soon my driftin days will be done
and a good place to be planted
would be down in the desert sun
I only ask this one wish be granted
There the ground would be dry and crusty
and forever piled high over me...
the sand would be driftin and dusty
perhaps for me a fitting destiny
It always rings true
I`m a drifter and I`m dusty
I`m sure I`ve made some people blue
and I`m really gettin rusty
To anyone who`s been hurt by me
ignored or maybe cast aside
or I have treated rude or mean
on my driftin wayward lifetime ride
I can only offer this...to you
a humble profound apology
As the flames of my journey fade away
the embers will turn to ash
to end my life long driftin ways
this dusty ole` drifter will return to dust
