The End of the Affair" (SID, July 25, 2000)

--Sonny and Carly let foolish pride prevent them from revealing their true feelings…at least for now.

Believing that Sonny’s kindness and understanding following the death of their baby was nothing more than him following through with an obligation, Carly is torn between fear of walking away from a him and fear of being a fool for love. She tries to communicate her feelings, but he tells her that she has the choice of staying or leaving. Both too proud to admit that they care for each other, they miss the chance to reveal what’s really in their hearts.

Coming Together Again.

Feeling rejected, Carly lights into Sonny when he doesn’t say that she can stay at the penthouse, but instead offers to support her financially. At his prodding, she agrees; however, she does insist on returning his engagement.

Once apart from Sonny, Carly has a hard time adjusting to his absence. In the meantime, he jumps down everyone’s throats in an attempt to keep from admitting that he truly misses her. Down and out, he finally tries to ask her to live with him again, but the words won’t come out. He instead asks her for dinner.

Has Sonny Replaced Carly?

In turn, Carly tosses aside her pride and returns to the penthouse to ask if she and Michael can come back. But the blood drains from her face when she sees Sonny comforting Liz, who is distraught about Lucky. Having learned nothing from her misunderstanding of Jason and Liz’s closeness, Carly mistakes this scene, too, for a romantic tryst.

Furious, Carly turns down Sonny’s money and says that she wants nothing from him unless he wants her. Deeply affected by her words, the forlorn mafioso reflects on the wonderful times they recently shared.

Last Chance.

Hoping to be comforted by her mother, Carly turns to Bobbie. But Bobbie is anything but passive with her off-kilter daughter. She accuses Carly of sabotaging her relationship with Sonny and tells her that she can not move into the brownstone.

Later, Sonny learns from Bobbie that Carly has no place to stay. After having it out with both Bobbie and Sonny, an angry Carly reluctantly decides to move back in with Sonny for now.

Happy about the possibility of being together with Sonny, Carly returns to the penthouse to ask him if she and Michael can move back in. What she wasn’t expecting was Liz…again! When Carly sees Sonny comforting Liz once more, she goes ballistic, accusing Liz of coming on to Sonny. Could this crazy confrontation be the thing that finally gets Sonny and Carly to open up to each other?
