You start in Link’s home town. He thinks he’s a Kokiri, but, unlike the others, he’s a lonely boy with no fairy. Until the Great Deku Tree awards him with Navi, one of the highest fairies. The tree summons you, but first, explore Kokiri Forest!
Talk to all:- There are people in almost every part of Hyrule. They all have something to say. What they say might seem useless now, but it’ll be useful later on.
Remember all:- You may even find people you’ve talked to before in different places! Talk to them again- they will probably have something else to tell you. Almost everyone will have more things to tell you later on.
Sword and shield:- To get the Kokiri Sword you must go through the hole at the end of the Kokiri Training Course (this is near to the Know-It-All brothers’ house). Go left, and go straight forward until you come to the chest. Watch out for the rock that is rolling around this area. To get the Deku Shield you must find 40 rupees around the forest.
The great Deku Tree, guardian of the Kokiri, has been cursed. Gannondorf has poisoned it. It has called on Link to stop him from taking over Hyrule.
Inside the tree:- Equip yourself with the sword and shield. Central passage on map, kill Triffids and get Deku Sticks. Enter the tree. Go up the red ladder. Then go to the chest with Dungeon Map along ledges. Go through door at same height. Beat Deku Scrub by reflected the nuts he fires at you back at him. Go to next room. Jump across rocks for the slingshot. Slingshot red ladder above door you entered through. Exit. Slingshot the skulltullas and climb up. Go through door on the same level. Stand on stepping stone, and jump across pillars to chest with compass. A gold skulltulla is here, too. Light a deku stick with fire from the torch, and light the unlit torch. Exit.
The basement:- Three skulltullas here. Use slingshot on their tummies. Stand on edge of ledge, and jump down to cobwebbed hole in floor. It’ll break. Go down, light deku stick and carry it through shallow part of water to burn cobweb. Open door. Kill Deku scrub and slingshot eye above door. Enter. Dive, and touch switch to lower water. Stand on stone and ride across. Push block to door. Enter, then light torches. Kill all three spiders in next room. Burn webs, through the gap, and push the block into the water. Light stick, run across and press up and R to burn web on floor. Go down. Defeat Deku scrubs in this order- middle, right, left. Go through.
Large Arachnid Gohma:- Watch cut scene. Watch out for when spider swings down for you. Sword Gohma’s eye. She’ll climb wall and drop three eggs. Sword them before they hatch. Repeat until she’s dead. Grab heart container and walk into light. You’ll get Kokiri’s Emerald, the first spiritual stone. Sadly, the poor Deku tree dies from Gannondorf’s poison curse.
The palace where Zelda lives, and Gannondorf is secretly trying to take over. At the moment, you are unknown as an enemy to Gannondorf, but Zelda recognises you from a dream.
Saria:- Leave Kokiri Forest for Hyrule Field. You meet Saria. She gives you the Fairy Ocarina. Go to Hyrule Castle. The drawbridge’s only open in daytime.
Hyrule Market:- First door on right is a room full of rupee pots. Return to here when you are short of rupees. This becomes the ghost shop when you grow up. Second on right is the Bazaar. Buy a Hyrule Shield. You’ll need this for later. Third door is the potion shop, which isn’t too useful at this early stage (I recommend using Lon Lon Milk when still a kid), and fouth is the Temple of Time, which will be very important later on, though you can’t use it at this early stage. Straight on is the Happy Mask shop. First on left is the Treasure Chest game (only open at night). Next is Bombchu Bowling (also only open at night) and the back alleys (there is a Bombchu shop around the back alleys somewhere).
Malon and Guards:- On path leading to Hyrule Castle gate you’ll meet Malon. She’s the daughter of Talon, who is the Ranch Keeper. Talk to her twice, and you’ll get a weird egg. Climb up vines beside her. Avoid guards, and get to moat. Jump in, and swim along to small slope on corner. Climb up it.
Talon:- Run along and you’ll meet Talon. Wait until daylight and give him the chicken which hatched from the weird egg. He’ll run off. Push crates into water, and jump across to gap. Crawl through.
Guards:- Avoid guards in courtyard by running past bottom or left of screen when they’re not looking. Don’t let them see you. Then, go through the archway at the end and you’ll meet Zelda. View Cut scene. When over, walk away from Zelda and talk to Impa, who’ll teach you Zelda’s Lullaby, which is the royal theme, and your first tune. Listen to what she says.
Here’s how to get all the masks! You do this as a kid.
Keaton Mask: Get egg from Malon near Castle, go to Princess, get letter, show letter to guard at entrance to Death Mountain, wear mask, he’ll buy it.
Skull and Spooky masks: Get Skull mask from shop, go to Lost Woods, take first left, play Saria’s Song to call Skull kid, stand on shorter stump, wear mask and talk. He’ll buy mask. Back to shop, get spooky mask, go to graveyard, wear mask and talk to kid (daytime). He’ll buy mask, return to shop.
Bunny and Truth masks: Get Bunny mask , find jogger in Hyrule Field. Follow him till he tires (make sure you’re wearing mask) Talk to him and sell mask. You can now get Mask of Truth. You can now talk to eyestones!
A set of stables right in the middle of Hyrule Field. Talon has returned to the ranch after falling asleep delivering milk to Hyrule Castle, and so has his daughter, Malon.
Ranch Buildings:- Building in far corner of ranch contains crates that can be moved for a heart piece. Meet Talon again in the Chicken Shed, and play the chicken game to get Lon Lon Milk.
Malon and Epona:- Malon is now back in the ranch, find her by the stables. Speak to her until she teaches you Epona’s Song. You’ll now see Epona, the wild, fast, but loyal, horse. You will be able to ride her in the future.
The home of Saria, the Lost Woods is a dark and mystical forest that, unless you know your way, can have you walking around for ages. There is lots of things here, like a pond and a man sitting on a tree trunk that don’t do anything now, but will later.
Dangerous Pathways:- Go to the Sacred Forest Meadow- to get here go right, forward, right, forward, forward, left, forward, forward. Listen out for an Ocarina tune. It means you’re going the right way.
Top of route:- When you see a wolfos, use sheild and sword to kill it, and open the gate. Then, in the next section, kill Deku Scrubs to get to top of map screen. The ladder at the top of this map leads to a Fairy Fountain, where you can boost your health and catch a fairy if you need to.
Saria:- At top of Sacred Forest Meadow you’ll meet Saria. She’ll teach you Saria’s Song. She is an important part of the story. Now you can talk to her wherever you are. Head to Death Mountain.
The Goron Tribe is a friendly but shy race who live within Death Mountain and feed on rocks. Unfortunately the tastiest rocks are within Dodongo’s Cavern which has been taken over by monsters. This is where you come in.
Kariko Graveyard: You’ll pass Kariko Village on your way to Death Mountain. Head for graveyard. Play Zelda’s Lullaby in front of Triforce stone at back on graveyard. This opens a hole, so go down it.
Royal Family Tomb: You’re in the Royal Family tomb. Slngshot all four bats to open the next door. Zombies are in the next room. They freeze you if you get too close to them. The best thing to do is run past them when they’re not looking in your direction. Next is the actual tomb itself. Learn the secret melody of the Composer brothers which is the Sun Song.
Goron City : Head for mountain trail. Give Zelda’s letter to guard. Follow the path until you reach Goron City. Enter. Jump down to the bottom of the city and walk to a stone door. Stand on the carpet and play Zelda’s Lullaby to open it. You meet Darunia, king of the Gorons. Light four torches with the flame next to him. Go back and talk. Play Saria’s Song and get the Goron’s Bracelet. This enables you to pick up the Goron “special crop”.
Go back down the path from Goron City and stop at an entrance blocked with rocks. This is Dodongo’s Cavern.
Unblock the entrance: Bomb flowers are growing above this entrance. Go up and throw them down to destroy the rocks. Go in. bomb stone door. Next room, jump across pillars to middle. There are three laser creatures. You can bomb them, but it’s quicker just to outrun their lasers.
Flaming bats: Flame bats are also here- use your Hylian shield, because they’ll burn your Deku one. Get a new one from Deku Scrub if you need (or want) it. Go through door bottom right of screen. Next room, push statue on stepping stone to raise bars in front of door. Go through and run past bats to next room.
Lizards and Scrubs: Here, kill two leg lizards to open bars. Go through. Blow hole in bricked door and go in if you need more Deku sticks. A Deku Scrub sells you them at an inflated price. Light torches to raise bars exposing next door. Then go through.
Bomb Tower : You’ll be back in first room. Stand on stepping stone to release bars on opposite door and go to it. Don’t rush, or you’ll fall into the lava! Return to the door that was previously barred up and enter. Now, a tower with bombs around the edge. First blow up doorway on the same level. Compass inside. Go back to tower and put bomb on side in the gap between the line of bombs. Blow to reveal stairway. Go up and around ledges to see Vines and Skulltulas. Kill them and make sure to get the Gold Skulltula token. Go into room on same level- the door is in front of the skulls. Kill bats with slingshot, then move statues and climb up red ladder on column. Stand on stone to lift bars to next door. Now you’re in the upper part of the first main room. Run, and then jump across rope bridge to next door. Open and go through. As you enter next room watch out for the spiked metal things. Climb down red ladder. On top of one square stone is a bomb plant and a chest (red rupee inside). Run, and throw bomb at blocked door. Go through. You’re in a furnace room. Slingshot the eye thing above and go through the next door. There are two leg lizards. Kill them and bars to next room will rise. Cross lava on stepping stones to get to it. Go through. Slingshot the first shield above you. Jump to the first pillar and Slingshot the eye on your left. Quickly go over the next room.
Get Bomb Bag: Look around, and you’ll find chest with bomb bag. You can now hold 20 bombs. Go through door opposite to where you came in. Stepping stone raises pillar. Stand on rope bridge and drop bombs into the Giant Dodongo’s eyes. This opens his mouth. Jump down and go through.
Find Dodongo boss entrance: Next room, go through passage door and around until you see a block. Push it down into square hole in middle. The bars across the next door will raise. Through to room with small chest. Bombs are inside it. Bomb the central darker bit and go down. Confront Dodongo boss. Dodongo Boss: Now for the Dodongo boss- a massive fire breathing dragon that runs around a lava pool. Avoid it when it runs past by hiding under shield. Chuck a bomb in its mouth when it roars, and when it’s stunned go up to it and strike it with your sword. Do this four or five times to defeat it. Get heart container and go into blue light. Darunia gives you ruby stone. He tells you to visit the fairy at the top of the mountain.
The forbidden peaks where only the brave will enter- don’t worry if you lose energy, a Great Fairy will fill you up! You can easily miss the trail up. Keep an eye out for rock platforms going up, just past Goron City and the red flag.
Find the fairy: Navi will give you a hint about a Great Fairy on the mountain. Look out for steps with rocks on top. Blow it up and climb up. Then, with careful timing, throw a bomb at the last rock. A bit further on is an innocent looking plain- but it’s not! The best tactic to avoid the rocks is to run, and then when they start falling hide under your shield. Move between rock falls. Climb the mountain face, and note the owl(he’ll give you a lift down later) and then blow up the door on the left. Once inside, stand on Triforce and play Zelda’s Lullaby. Watch cut scene. Get power sword move. Exit the fairy fountain and return to the owl, and he’ll give you lift down.
Link is about to enter the world of Hyrule’s water people, the Zora’s. A race of pale skinned people who can live on land or water and are a bit suspicious of anyone who isn’t a Zora. But they hate Gannondorf, that’s for sure.
Frogs ‘n’ beans: Head for Zora’s Domain past Zora’s River. When a rock blocks your way, blow it up with a bomb. Buy magic beans from fat bloke. There’s an underwater door you can now reach. Dive in and go through and you’ll surface at the bottom of Lake Hylia. Lake Hylia: Empty bottle is near you. Grab it. You’ll need it later. Back to Zora’s Domain. Use bottle to find a letter from Ruto. Take letter to Zora. He’ll let you through gap behind. Go to main cavern and catch a fish in shallow water outside shop by swinging bottle near them.

Take Ruto through door and chuck her to the other side. Stand on yellow circle to raise water. Go to next room, and slingshot tonsil in passage to get to it. Jump onto the moving platform and make your way past the jellyfish infested room to face several Tailpasarans. Run up the right hand passage, step on the button and drop Ruto on it so you can use the door. Use the slingshot to defeat your enemies and collect the Boomerang. Run back to the jellyfish room to collect the wandering Ruto and return to the room full of Tailpasarans. Head up the left passage this time and pet her on this button as well. Target the tentacle with the boomerang and keep throwing it. You’ll need to get close to draw it out, but keep moving or you’ll take damage. Exit, and to your left you’ll notice the passage is clear, so enter the room. Burst the bubbles and collect the compass. The right hand central passage is also clear, so enter the room at the end and take out the tentacle. Return to the jellyfish area with the princess and drop down the gap where the electric jelly was. Go through the corridor and throw Ruto onto platform where spiritual stone is. Listen to Navi and target it’s weak spot. When it’s stunned, sword the green spot on his arse. Once it’s dead, climb onto the platform to be lifted to the next level. Go through door. Stun the two wobbling red things, then head towards the next room. Put crate on switch to open it. Here, climb up vines to see switch blocked by glass then boomerang around it to open the boss door.
Bio Electric Anemone Barinade: Target and boomerang the tentacles above it. Then target and boomerang electric jellyfish shooting around after stunning it’s centre. Now target middle section to make it stop rotating, and quickly target and hit the surrounding jellies. When gone, target its centre and sword it when it’s stunned. After defeat it, get heart container and go into blue light to get the Spiritual Stone of Water, Zora’s Sapphire. Now proudly holding all three stone head back to Zelda.
