Feminism And The Black Woman

Hi!! My name is Stephanie....Welcome to my homepage on FEMINISM AND THE BLACK WOMAN. Hopefully, by the time you leave my page, you will have grasped my attempt to show you the reasons the majority of black women have rejected feminist ideals, the black woman's response to feminism, the dualist mentality that feminism imposes on the lives of black women, the relationships between black women and feminists, and the black woman's right to cultural independence.

For over twenty years efforts to coax black women into the feminist movement, have, for the most part, failed. The presence of black women within the academic field, politics, and the arts who have helped promote feminist ideaoligies cannot be denied, however, the overwhelming majority of black women have rejected the feminist ideals and continue to do so.

Upon reading my homepage, you may come acrossed the term Africana Womanism . So that you are not utterly confused with what I am speaking of, below is a brief description of where the term Africana Womanism originates.

Brenda J. Verner, teacher at the University of Massachusetts, where her special field of interest is African and Black American Women, in her Essay entitled AFRICANA WOMANISM suggests:

The reason black women stand so adamantly against feminist ideology lies in the cultural mindset of Africana women. The way black women think; a thought mechanism that comes out of centuries of struggle for dignity; the way they view the world from their place inside Africana culture; their expectations of another, and the principles upon which they base their decision-making. I've named this cultural thought- Africana Womanism. Africana, because black women belong to the world diaspora of African people; and Womanism because Africana women are members of families, communities, and a culture composed of men, women, and children. Her womanhood is anchored inside the family, and her allegiance is tied to the culture. Africana Womanism - the cultural voice of black women.
