Questions to ask yourself about the dog you want
What breed?
Do you want a large or small breed?
Wolf hybrids are very large animals. Sometimes hybrids can reach up to
200 lbs., and a hind foot standing position of over 6 feet. They need
a living space that is big enough for them to exercise, play, sleep, and
eat. Different animals need different areas for these certain things,
but they all need adequate amounts of space. This must be considered for
the favor of the animal.
What type of coat?
Wolf hybrids shed 2 to 4 times a year. They shed their summer coat to
get a nice thick winter coat. They also shed their wintercoat once or
twice in order to get the right summer coat. First they shed the long
protective hairs, that shed them from the coldness of winter. Second,
they shed the 'under' hairs. If shedding is a problem for your household,
wolf hybrids are obviously out of the question.
Active or quiet?
Wolf hybrids are very active. They howl, dig, and are destructive. Howling
is not just a night time thing. They howl during the day, and at night.
Howling can be heard for up to a mile in a wooded area, and in a clear
area, they have been heard for over one mile. Their digging happens all
through their life. Destructive behavior is shredding papers, books, and
other objects when bored. They need lots of attention, and love to be
a good animal.
Purpose of the dog?
Wolf hybrids are not attacking dogs. They will run before they guard anything.
Regular dogs are better for attacking, and protecting situations. The
relationship between owner and hybrid is trust. Wolf hybrids usually will
protect their 'pack', but they are not for that sole reason. They are
not a status animal, or a fad. They are a real responsibility and need
care and love in order to survive, and be a good companion.
Price?
Many breeders sell animals at a different price. I have heard of animals
claimed as wolf hybrids sold for $4,000. Others are given away for free.
One must be careful when purchasing a wolf hybrid because many people
claim their animal has wolf in it, but they are just trying to make a
sale.
Deciding on an individual animal
What is the dog going to be used for?
Wolf hybrids are companions, not to be used for anything else. They are
not good guard dogs. Even though sled dogs have been known to have wolf
in them, wolf hybrids of high percent and generation is not good for this
use. They are lazy, and will do what they want when they want.
