The kennel should be at least 6 feet in height with an attached roof and
floor. Wolves and hybrids can easily jump 8 feet and above from a standing
position. If the kennel is to be on dirt, you'll need to have a floor in
it so that they won't dig out. Cattle panels (sold at most feed stores)
are 4 feet X 16 feet and cost around $17.00 each. These make acceptable
floors. A layer of dirt should be thrown on top of them so that the animal
isn't walking directly on wire. The floor will need to be wired to all sides
of the kennel at the base. Cement blocks should be wired to all for corners
of the kennel to anchor the structure down. Door to the kennel should have
a pad lock. Make sure you have an extra key kept in your house or on your
key ring. Spray lock, key, and hinges to entrance with de-icer in the winter
time to prevent freeze up. A door that is safely secured by a lock and key
will keep your animal in as well as strangers out. You'll also need to have a warm, dry dog house inside the kennel. Keep wood shavings in house; straw and hay will mold when wet and emit fumes that are harmful to your animal's respiratory system. Change shavings as needed. Check to see that there are no nail sticking out anywhere. If so, pound them flat. Black screen cloth can be bought at a hardware store to provide shade in summer if area is in the sun. Attach to outside of roof on kennel top, so that there is not chance of them ripping it down from the inside. This can be removed in the winter and stored for next year. A plastic swimming pool can be purchased for inside the kennel so that your animal can play in the water in the summer. Remember to keep the water clean in the pool and change as often as needed. Minnows and other small fish can be put in the pool for them to play with or watch. Keep the kennel free from droppings, old food, and bones. Wooden poles can provide a natural look to kennels whether they are placed inside or out. Wire (or u-nail) directly to kennel fencing. Wolf hybrids love to play. Decorate inside with big tree stumps and large rocks. Bird feeders placed along outside of kennel (out of reach, of course) will amuse your animal. They like to watch the birds come and go; keep feeder full. Flowers planted along outside of kennel (also out of reach, some flowers can be poisonous) can produce a land-scaped look and add color to the area. Kennel panels and/or extra fencing can be added to an already standing structure to enlarge or expand an existing structure. Always have a roof on top. Kennels can be fun to design and decorate; your animal will let you know if they likes the new idea of yours or not. It will be up to you to change or alter it to their needs. Think about the safety of your animal first (nails sticking out, wires poking through, keep ends flush, etc.), but be creative. The more natural your kennel set-up is, then more comfortable your animal will feel. A secure wolf hybrid, is a happy wolf hybrid! |
