Medford sends 8 wrestlers to state
BLOOMING PRAIRIE -- The Medford Tigers captured four Section 2A individual championships on Saturday evening and will send a total of eight wrestlers to the state Class 1A individuals tournament. Top-ranked Blaine Kuhlman, a senior at 130 pounds, leads the Tiger contingent into state after posting two pins and a 3-2 decision in the finals over conference rival Dan Petsinger of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva. He'll take a 29-0 record to the Target Center. Kuhlman's freshman brother, Mitch Kuhlman (31-2), nabbed the 135-pound crown with two pins and two major decisions, including 8-0 over Alden-Conger's Jeremy Besser in the finals. Nick Yule (29-2) is the 112-pound champion with a pin and two decisions, including 8-4 over JWP's John Beelow in the title round. Greg Brendemeuhl, Class 1A's top-ranked 103-pounder, racked up three pins, then a 13-4 decision over Tim Brockway of LeCenter for the title and will take a 30-2 record to state. Also qualifying for state by placing second were Brent Reinhard at 125, Jeremy Glende at 140, Cary Leibeg at 160, and Aaron Schroht at 189. Jesse James was Waterville-Elysian-Morristown's lone qualifier with a runner-up finish at 171 pounds. Other champions were Brandon Krienke of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 119, Brian Miller of LeCenter at 145, Nate Schlaak of NRHEG at 152, Joe Moon of NRHEG at 171, Jon Whelock of JWP at 189, and John Rathai of NRHEG at heavyweight. The state meet will be held Thursday through Saturday. Medford has also qualified for the state team tournament and will face Frazee 8 p.m.
