Medford wrestlers thump Buccaneers
By JOHN BLACKMER Sports Writer MEDFORD -- In what may have been
one of the most important meets of the year with regards to the Gopher Conference
title, the Medford Tigers topped the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers 31-23
Thursday evening in Medford. Medford pulled out the wins they needed in the lower
weights, as well as creating a few surprises, to prevent the Bucs from charging back
through their own strength in the upper weights as they needed to gain a win.
Medford claimed the first weight class by forfeit and the Bucs the final one, but
most of the matches in between where perhaps closer than both teams anticipated.
In several matches, the Tigers better conditioning at this early point of the season
earned them the win. Greg Brendemuehl opened the action with a 4-1 decision over Thomas
Morsching at 112. Morsching worked swiftly to counter Brendemuehl's drags and rolls,
but Brendemuehl's pair of takedowns earned him the match. The eagerly awaited 119 bout
between Medford's Nick Yule and WEM newcomer Jayme Hiller started out a quick-battling
affair with Hiller carrying a 2-0 lead after the first period and a 3-1 lead after two.
Hiller seemed to tire as the match wore on as Yule persisted, however, and Yule won the
match 6-3 after earning an escape, takedown, and being awarded a stalling penalty point
in the final period. "We knew this would be a tough match tonight," offered Buc coach
Jeff Boran. "Hiller is a tough kid, just needs to work on conditioning." Brent Yule
defeated Buc Ryan Knish 6-5 at 125 for the third Medford win in a row that, along with
the early forfeit at 103, gave the Tigers a 15-0 team lead. "We thought we could come
away with at wins at 125 and 119," said Boran. Matt Stoering was the first to put some
team points on the board for the Bucs with his 16-5 major decision over Chad Mifek at
130. Then Tiger Brent Reinhard earned the first pin on the night when he turned over
Isaiah Morsching at 3:27. Buc Brady James won 11-1 over Scott Balzer at 140 before
Mitch Kuhlman answered back for the Tigers with a 23-10 win over Chase Williams at
145. Both were major decisions, but Kuhlman was just inches and a split-second away
from a takedown at the final buzzer, just missing the technical fall. Going into the
160-pound match, Medford still led 28-8, but the Bucs had high hopes that Gabe Reysack
could start the comeback with a win over Jay DeCoux. However the match was won by DeCoux 7-2,
all but squelching any last chance for the Bucs to carry the night. "We were hoping for a
bigger lead going into 160 so we could relax about our upper weights," recalled Medford coach
Dennis Whitman. "Then we got the huge upset at 160." Boran echoed that sentiment. "It was a shock,"
he said. "DeCoux is a tough wrestler, he never stops. I think Gabe's conditioning isn't yet
where we want it to be." The Bucs did get the wins they were hoping for in the final two wrestled
matches on the night. Orrin Wendt defeated Tiger Brian Mielke 5-3 at 171 before Ryan Thelemann
pinned Bob Hanson in 4:35 at 189. Gabe Gehrke claimed the weight as forfeit to bring the score
in at 31-23. The win was the first duel meet victory for the Tigers, while the Bucs are now
sitting 1-1.
