2000/2001 TEAM LINEUP

Short on Numbers; Long on Experience! Medford Tiger Wrestling 2000/2001

Medford wrestling comes into the 2001 season with only 20 wrestlers but justifiably high expectations. After their first ever State Tournament appearance last year, this team desires to improve on their 2000 State tournament results. 2000 Class A coach of the year Dennis Whitman and assistant coach Nick Neuman have the foundation in place for a better all-around team. Medford returns 9 starters, 3 with 30+ wins and 4 more with 20+ wins, they also had 11 wrestlers invested time wrestling Freestyle/Greco over the summer. For this team to develop into a champion is must have someone take a leadership role. Medford is loaded with under-classmen, having only two seniors who saw action last year. They are a young team with plenty of experience to build around. Greg Brendemuehl and Mitch Kuhlman have proven they are two of the most talented wrestlers in the nation and must and will most likely be the most consistent wrestlers on the team. The Yule brothers along with Brent Reinhard, Jay DeCoux, Steve Maas and Bob Hanson will also be very tough to beat. Based on how Kavitz, Mifek, Barta, Glende, Mielke and Karow develop throughout the year will probably be the determining factor on how good this team can be.

Medford Wrestlers for 2000/2001 :

Freshman Dustin Kavitz may get his first shot at varsity after producing an 18-4 record on the JV last season. Over the last three years Medford is 93-10 at 103# and Dustin would continue that quality of wrestling.

Danny Simmons a freshman compiled a 20-3 JV record. Danny wrestled Freestyle over the summer, placing 4th at 94.5# in the 2000 State Freestyle tournament. Danny may be a little small for 103# this season.

Junior Greg Brendemuehl finished last season as State runner-up with a 36-3 record. Greg is a very quick, aggressive, punishing wrestler. Greg wrestled Freestyle & Greco again this summer, winning the prestigious Cadet National Greco tournament. Over the last three years Medford is 80-19 at 112#.

Nick Yule another junior compiled an impressive 31-4 record. Over the last three years Medford is 85-24 at 119#. Nick has invested many summers wrestling Freestyle & Greco, placing 4th at 121# in the 200 State Freestyle Tournament.

Brent Yule a freshman, made the most out of his first shot at varsity compiling a 21-16 record. Brent has invested many summers wrestling Freestyle/Greco, Placing 2nd at 125# in the 2000 State Freestyle Tournament. Brent wrestles with great intensity.

Matt Barta a junior compiled a 9-7 JV record.

Junior Chad Mifek who’s work ethic will allow him to greatly improve on his 5-5 record. Chad wrestled Freestyle over the summer and has improved steadily.

Kelly Markham eighth grade.

Junior Brent Reinhard comes off a great year were he was 24-8 with a 5th place finish at the State tournament. Brent has an impressive career record of 50-10. Last year Brent made a very difficult jump from 103# to 125# and was still able to dominate opponents.

Sophomore Mitch Kuhlman has already compiled a record of 102-9, 60 pins, 3 trips to the State tournament, and two 3rd place finishes. Mitch has a legitimate shot at the all-time state win record of 210 and the state pin record of 127. He would need to average 36 wins and 23 pins over the next 3 years.

Jeremy Kaplan a freshman compiled a 10-9 JV record.

Freshman Scott Balzer may get his first shot on varsity after a successful 18-4 JV season.

Junior Brent Glende would have been on varsity years ago but was positioned behind his brother Jeremy. He was 3-2 while filling in last season. Brent is very versatile and could wrestle from 145# to 171#.

Mitch Elzen a freshman was 9-8 on JV.

Senior Jay DeCoux was 21-17 at 160# last season, you can expect big things from Jay as he will probably drop to 152#. He is the best-conditioned wrestler on the team. Jay is a very dangerous wrestler to compete against. Jay will not quit and does not stop attacking his opponent. He has tremendous heart and gives 100% all the time.

Junior Steve Maas was 22-14 and showed real improvement throughout the season. Expect Steve to make a run at the state tournament this year. Steve worked very hard over the summer lifting weights 4 and 5 times per week and wrestling in the Freestyle/Greco program.

Junior Bob Hanson was 19-19 last season. Bob wrestled a demanding schedule with 14 of his losses coming to state entrants.

Senior Bryan Mielke was 7-15, but was better than his record indicates. Expect Bryan to reverse that record.

Junior Paul Karow was 6-6 on the season, getting his first varsity experience while splitting time with Bryan. Paul wrestled Freestyle/Greco over the summer and has shown the potential to be the best big man Medford has ever had.
