By JOHN BLACKMER Sports Writer FARIBAULT -- There might have been one meet too many Thursday evening when the Falcons and four visiting squads tangled on the mats in Nomeland Gymnasium. The night started out with Faribault and Medford each taking a shot at Blue Earth Area and Winona, both of which in turn trounced Faribault and Medford, leaving the local squads 0-2 on the night and before squaring off to face each other in the night cap. Faribault lost to Blue Earth 42-19 and Winona 41-18 before topping Medford 36-20. Medford lost to Winona 43-13 and Blue Earth 42-18 before their loss to Faribault. Both the Falcons and Tigers seemed as though they might have been better off to to just skip their final bout and go home for the night, as each were battered and perhaps a bit demoralized after their grueling losses. ³Both teams were dealing with injury and illness,² commented Falcon coach Tim Tousignant, referring to his squad and the Tigers. ³It was the remaining wounded going after each other in the last match.² Tiger coach Dennis Whitman clearly seemed disappointed in the nightıs results. ³It was embarrassing,² he confessed after watching his team lose their only three duals of the year so far all in one night. ³Itıs not that Iım disappointed in how the fill-in wrestlers did, they wouldnıt have been there if I didnıt think they could wrestle, but even the starters didnıt perform.² Faribault was without the services of Joel Sunde, Jesse Sunde, and Aaron Meyers. Medford was missing Greg Brendemuehl, Nick Yule, and Steve Maas. On the other hand, for the first time this season, Medford put a heavyweight wrestler on the mat. Paul Karrow, who has recovered from his football injury, pinned his first opponent of the season, Blue Earthıs David Mensing, before losing by pins to top ranked Max Lossen of Winona in :49 and Falcon Bill Bellingham in 3:37. Medfordıs Mitch Kuhlman, top ranked at 140 in class A, dominated Faribaultıs Tommy Augustin for a 10-0 major decision. Augustin is ranked 4th in AAA. Faribaultıs only top ranked wrestler, Jeremy Chavis at 160, even went 2-1 on the night, losing a tight 3-1 decision to Winonaıs Jarrett Wolvington before pinning his final two opponents of the evening. Blue Earth Area, ranked fourth in AA, is stocked with several top-ranked wrestlers that presented tough challenges for the Faribault matmen. Of these, the most notable was the buzzsaw Eric Duchene faced at 152. Ty Eustice, who is looking to win his fourth state championship this year in class AA, corralled Duchene for 11 unanswered takedowns on the way to a 23-11 major decision. It was only the second loss of the year for Duchene, who is ranked fifth in AAA. The Falcons are now 7-6 overall, 2-2 in the Big 9. Medford is now 4-3. Both have today off before heading into tournaments tomorrow, Faribault in Farmington and Medford at Grand Meadows.
