He then moved to New York and went to SUNY, where he studied acting. He soon got kicked out. He then moved to Los Angeles and within three months of living there, he landed the part on the short-lived TV series, Cracker. He then went on to film such movies as Halloween: H20 and The Faculty.

All About Josh's Career Only two months after his first audition, Josh Hartnett impressed just about everyone enough that he is now one of Hollywood's hottest leading actors. Josh has already starred in two films for Miramax. He recently starred in "The Faculty," with Salma Hayek, Elijah Wood, Robert Patrick and Jon Stewart. Josh played Zeke, the coolest kid in high school, who finds himself battling his teachers when he discovers that they are all aliens. This sci-fi thriller written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Robert Rodriguez, it mixes elements of horror, sci-fi and comedy genres. But, even before that, Josh co-starred with Jamie Lee Curtis in "Halloween :H20," for which he was honored with an MTV Movie Award nomination for "Best Breakthrough" performance he didn't win :( Josh played John, the only son of Laurie (Curtis) and the nephew of Michael Meyers. The film was a big success for the Halloween franchise, grossing more than $60 million domestically. Hartnett just landed a starring role opposite Leelee Sobieski and Chris Klein in Fox 200’s "Here On Earth." The film tells the story of three young students involved in a romantic triangle. Hartnett will portray Jasper, the best friend / boyfriend of Samantha (Sobieski), who has to make an emotionally difficult sacrifice in order to assure her happiness as she struggles with a terminal illness. "Here on Earth" is scheduled to begin shooting in Hartnett’s home state of Minnesota in July Josh recently completed a starring role opposite Mekhi Phifer in Dimension Film’s "O," written by Brad Kaaya and directed by Tim Blake Nelson. This modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, "Othello" has Hartnett portraying Hugo Goulding, a character based on Shakespeare’s chilling nefarious Iago. The story will be set in modern times at an upscale prep school and is scheduled to be released next March. Josh will also appear in the black comedy "The Virgin Suicides" along with James Woods, Kathleen Turner and Kirsten Dunst. The film, which was well received at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, was produced by Francis Ford Coppola for American Zoetrope and is the directorial debut for his daughter, Sofia. It will be distributed nationally by Paramount Classics early next year. Josh will also appear in New Line Cinema’s "Town and Country." Due out next February, he will portray Warren Beatty, who is Diane Keaton’s son in the film which also co-stars Goldie Hawn, Andie MacDowell and Garry Shandling. The plot revolves around a man (Beatty), who disillusioned with his marriage, endures a number of affairs before realizing that he truly loves his wife (Keaton). Born in San Francisco and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Josh took to acting at an early age. Stemming from a love of the arts, he quickly made his way into the world of theatre. He landed several roles in various Minneapolis stage productions including "Into The Woods" at the Steppingstone Theater, "Tom Sawyer" at Children’s Theater Company and "Freedom Riders" at the Youth Performance Center. Josh has also been featured in several national commercials. In 1996, after graduating from South High School, Josh traveled to the East Coast to attend the acting program at SUNY Purchase, New York. {which he was later kicked out of for mouthing off and it's rumored there was something going on between Josh and the professor's daughter! Lucky girl!} In February of 1997, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue film and television work. He quickly landed his first acting role on the hardhitting ABC drama, "Cracker." In the show, Josh starred opposite Robert Pastorelli portraying Michael Fitzgerald, the troubled and misunderstood son of Gerry Fitzgerald (Pastorelli). {The show was cancelled...unfortunately} With the rate at which his career is progressing and the number of quality roles already under his belt, Josh is definitely on his way to becoming one of the major players in Hollywood. & all of us girls will be totally rootin' ya on, Josh!
