Dreams

A child dreams oft of better times,
when the bell of years has chimed,
when his bedtime's his to time,
when a between-meal's snack's no crime.

He dreams of a time when he can say,
"I will not go to school this day!"
And the doctor he can keep at bay,
and attention he won't have to pay.

He dreams of drinking with no cup,
and on chocolate cake to sup,
and having for a pet a pup.
Oh! To be now all grown-up!

The grown-up, meanwhile, dreams himself
of having no concerns of health,
or having to work to gain his wealth,
though these dreams are dreamed with stealth.

He dreams of endless days of bliss,
of dewy meadows wreathed with mist,
of holding frogs within his fist,
of making dandelion twists.

He dreams of carefree hours spent
in searching for forgotten cents,
of sleeping in the yard in tents,
of not having to pay the rent.

He dreams of summer days so mild,
and exploring weedy lots so wild,
of ice cream sundaes so high piled.
Oh! To be once more a child!
