Class 52

Class 52

The class 52 western never carried TOPS numbers but they did see the BR blue cooperate images years which they mostly carried untill withdrawn between 1973 -1977. The nickname westerns came about becuase they spent much of their working lives in the westrn region of BR. They worked up to Chester and Birkenhead via Shrewsbury and Crewe. But they never went north than Crewe.

The westerns uses hydraulic transmission and they do not have ETH but use steam, and they only were dual braked in the last years and some were not dual braked at all. The westerns were replaced by 50's on the top link duties with new coaches such as mk2e with air condioning using ETH.
