The class 50's were one of the early dual purpose semi-fast diesel locomotives, taking over the work of the class 52 westerns, as this locos did not have ETH were the class 50 give ETH which was being usedd on the new stock, mainly Mk 2c coaches.
The class 50's were built by English Electric at it's Vulcan foundry in Newton-Le-willows, between 1967-1968. Fifty were built in total, and 50049 was turned into a freight loco and givben a 75 MPH top speed, hence 50149 50/1 sub class, although it did keep it's ETH capability.
