The internet is one of the best technologies for the classroom, second perhaps, to basic word-processing capabilities. One of the best ways teachers can use this technology is by construction of a website. Through this technology, teachers can provide ready access to course information for both students and parents, or, as I have tried to do, provide resources to colleagues with classroom information and links.

Teachers can create a valuable resource in a webpage, but perhaps more importantly, they can teach students how to use the technology. We know that authentic instruction calls upon students to create their own knowledge for the most meaningful educational experience. So, why not use html technologies to allow students to teach others about the world.

If you've ever visited ThinkQuest, you know that students around the world are using the internet to develop their own understanding of a myriad of topics, and they are doing an excellent job of sharing that information with the world. As teachers, we can strive to do this in our own classrooms. The place to begin is basic technological awareness. Many districts have integrated basic technology into curriculum. Teachers should strive to turn this basic understanding into something deeper, and more meaningful for students. A good deal of personal satisfaction comes from viewing the website you have created, available to view by almost anyone. Students and teachers alike can attain this satisfaction.

Integrating Educational Technology into Teaching, by Roblyer and Edwards, describes two approaches for integrating the Internet into instruction. The directed and constructivist approaches differ in their perspective toward the internet. The directed approach is very structured, the construcivist approach requires students to think critically and develop their own approach. (225). I think teachers can effectively integrate the internet by scaffolding these two approaches. Students can first learn how to develop familiarity with the internet through a directed approach. As the students become familiar, they can create their own websites.

This is one of my favorite technologies. I think it is incredibly versatile and incredibly versatile. I will continue to use it throughout my teaching carreer and instill my students with an appreciation for its many facets.
