Bull Run
A bloody victory at this field near Washington DC made the South confident: they could overcome the odds and win this war.
In July of 1861, Northerners actually went to the field to
observe the battle, as we would a football game. The misery
of war and the sight of heavy losses from brutal warfare
brought both North and South to the grim realization that
this would not be a short, clean victory for either side.
