Antietam
General Lee invaded the North in September of 1862. McClellan made an agressive move
for the first time in the War and engaged Lee on September 17, 1862. The battle on Antietam creek
was the deadliest battle in American history. Falling back on his passive tactics, McClellan
did not follow the South as they retreated. Lincoln removed him from command shortly thereafter.
Soon after this battle, Lincoln issued
the Emancipation Proclamation.
