Davis
Jefferson
Davis was selected to lead the Confederacy in 1861. The position was
a difficult one, as he was expected to create a new nation AND win a war for that
nation's independence. He had experience in government and the military,
though he was not capable or well-liked. The states of the Confederacy were too
independent to be successful as a nation - no matter how hard Davis tried to unite
them.
