Polaris announces the release of another branch of the Sportsman. The new Sportsman 335. The chassis the identical to the Sportsman 500, including shaft drive, independent rear suspension, and mega amounts of ground clearance. The engine is a 335cc air-cooled 4-stroke, which has low enough emmisions to ride in California. Bombardier announces the release of it's newest creation. An ATV. With a unique step-through seat, 5-speed handlebar mounted shifter (I think somebody is already trying to copy Honda!) and a Rotax engine. The step-through seat is truly new, but imagine trying to lean into a corner! Another one bites the dust! 9-12-97 Artic Cat announces the release of the 400 4x4 and 400 2x4. The powerplant the same as the 454 4x4 and 2x4, but the piston takes a shorter stroke, resulting in fewer cc's. 9-10-97 HONDA! announces the release of The 450 Foreman ES! With the same engine as the 400 Foreman, except bored out, it is as tough as nails. That is just the beginning. Honda also upgraded the suspension system an extra 2 inches, added floorboards, and changed the color. But the thing that really makes this atv shine is it's brand-new transmission. It is called electronic shifting. Instead of shifting with the foot, the ES allows the rider to shift with the left hand. Honda claims that it is as easy as an automatic, and it automatically changes the speed of the shift to your riding style.
