Melvins - 2/9/03
Grumpy's Bar Minneapolis, MN
The Melvins played at Grumpy's Bar & Grill on February 4th, 2003 for the 3rd year in a row. The doors opened at 8pm. As usual it did not start until 10pm.
The opening band was a local Minneapolis noise-metal-grunge band named The Dames. Their music was pretty decent, but the vocals were not so great... mainly because the singer voice was kinda shot from a recent cold. I was standing near the PA, and nearly every person was plugging their ear closest to the speaker when he sang. I wasn't wearing earplugs, so it was especially painful. I really enjoyed their guitar riffs when I wasn't plugging my ears. They played 10+ songs and even improvised when the guitarist broke a string and had to fix it. Check out their mp3's on their website.
When The Dames set was over, all of their amps and drums had to be torn down to make room for the Melvins. Grumpy's has a tiny stage and the place was packed, so the band had a heck of a time moving their stuff. Then Dale came out and set up his drums for about 20 minutes, with Roadbull's assistance.
Buzzo and Kevin came out shortly after and jumped right into the first song without a word. I was less than 2 feet away from Buzzo and was in great danger of getting clobbered by his guitar AND his hair. I probably annoyed the hell out of him with my camera. Kevin had was wearing a knee brace and the old crusty polka-dotted moo-moo, while Buzzo had on his black moo-moo with the red cross. Dale was in his skull basketball jersey and shorts.
Unlike the Dames, The Melvins' mixing was PERFECT. They didn't talk to the crowd at all other than to say "Goodnight." At the end of the set, I was lucky enough to snag Buzzo's setlist.

They were also selling posters for only $5. The posters came with a freaky promo sticker of the screen printing company.

I noticed some funny little quirks about the band... Buzzo stands on his tippy toes when he sings, Kevin blinks his eyes with the music, and Dale sings on almost every song.

The show was 21 years and up only, but somehow this girl snuck in. She looked to be about 12 or 13 and was totally rocking out. Youngest fan I've seen at the shows, so I had to snap a picture.
