Top 10 Parks

Knoebels

1. KNOEBELS GROVES
Elysburg, PA

Same Planet/Different World. Knoebels takes away all thoughts of the real world and immerses you in an otherworldly, secluded, timeless environment. The park is completely shrouded by trees, nestled deep within Pennyslvania's Appalachian mountains. Knoebels has all of the great, classic rides that most parks no longer bother to maintain. And what really sets Knoebels apart is that they KNOW how to maintain their rides. The Carousel comes complete with a grab-the-brass-ring device that enhances the traditional carousel riding experience. Classic Lusse Bumper Cars, an amazingly well-done Haunted House, and a simple little interactive flat ride called The Flyers make this park well worth visiting, with or without roller-coasters. Thankfully, Knoebels has four wonderful coasters, including three classic woodies. This park excels in every category I use to judge parks: roller-coasters, rides, food, atmosphere and service. Knoebels is more than just an amusement park, it's a state of mind.

Disneyland

2. DISNEYLAND
Anaheim, CA

A trip to Disneyland is guaranteed to make you smile. This park has so much to offer its guests - rides that totally immerse you in the Disney experience, and child-like memories that you can't find at any other park. I like the intimate, more traditional setting of Disneyland a bit more than the Magic Kingdom in Orlando's vast, more contemporary layout. And unlike Walt Disney World, which spreads its best rides among the four Florida parks, everything at Disneyland is concentrated into one park. What I don't like is Disney's use of the "FastPass" virtual queue system. It was meant to reduce waiting times on Disney's more popular attractions, but when the park is crowded it punishes those who wait in the standby line and only serves to clog an already overcrowded midway. Disneyland sets the standard for great rides. Splash Mountain, Space Mountain and the Haunted Mansion are the best of their kind, and Indiana Jones and the Matterhorn Bobsleds cannot be found in any other Disney park. Pirates of the Caribbean (the longer, better Disneyland version) is still my favorite ride in the park, and there is no better way to end the day at Disneyland than to watch the awesome show "Fantasmic!" On top of all that good food, friendly employees, and a clean, fantasy-like environment ensure an enjoyable experience for all - provided the park isn't too crowded! Regardless of your age, Disneyland will make you feel young!

Walt

3. THE MAGIC KINGDOM AT WALT DISNEY WORLD
Orlando, FL

While acknowledging my slight preference for the original Disneyland, there's no denying it's bigger brother in Florida is a one-of-a-kind trip that every person should experience at least once in their lifetime. For me a trip to Walt Disney World has become a ritual. So overwhelming, so intoxicating is the dazzling array of sights and sounds that I find myself needing a "Disney fix" at least once a year. This amazing complex of theme parks, water parks and resorts is so vast it overwhelms me every time I visit, and I doubt I'll ever be able to see everything this magical place has to offer. The four theme parks each provide a different kind of emotional experience, and they each require a different set of expectations. The one thing they all have in common is a standard of quality unmatched at every level - service, attractions, food and entertainment. The best way to start my day at the Magic Kingdom is to sit outside with a fresh cup of coffee and an apple strudel at the Main Street Bakery. From there on it feels like the world is your oyster. The Walt Disney World experience is one of those treasured memories of a lifetime that take you to another place and a different state of mind.

Cedar

4. CEDAR POINT
Sandusky, OH

The roller-coaster capitol of the world. Cedar Point is huge and has an energy all its own, and that energy is fun! This park has more roller-coasters and rides than any other park in the country. Its enormous size attracts huge crowds and long lines in the summer, and a lack of shading makes sunscreen along with proper footwear a must. It also enjoys a beautiful setting, positioned on a peninsula overlooking Lake Erie. The atmosphere at Cedar Point is upbeat, energetic and fun, with every kind of coaster you could possibly want. The ride ops perform with great efficiency, and some of the coaster queues come complete with DJs! What keeps this park from ranking higher is a corporate mentality that results in overkill on safety standards and procedures. Otherwise, this park has got it all. It might not have the best of any single thing, but it's got more of everything!

IOA

5. ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE
Orlando, FL

From the moment you enter the gates, the assault on your senses begins. A total sensory overload, this park is themed to within an inch of its life. Every technological advance has been applied to make every ride, every attraction, every moment an unforgettable experience. IOA has the most technologically advanced rides of any park, and theming that outclasses even Disney. The water rides are truly spectacular, even downright scary! The Adventures of Spiderman sets a new standard in 3-D simulation rides. Seuss Landing is simply the most delightful, fanciful children's area of any park I've ever visited, and One Fish Two Fish will leave you laughing and a little wet! One thing that would help this park would be to add more rides, that is really the only thing it needs. Unfortunately the park has chosen to follow Disney's lead by installing a virtual queue system that increases waiting times for those in the standby lines. Sadly, they did away with their single rider lines which, unlike the virtual queues, truly increased throughput and reduced waiting times for everyone. Other than those two things, IOA is a marvel. Every island, every ride, every queue, every concession stand is a revolution in design and theming. Islands of Adventure is truly a park for the new millennium!

BGW

6. BUSCH GARDENS EUROPE
Williamsburg, VA

The most beautiful theme park in America. Gloriously landscaped, wonderfully terrained, the park is covered in stunning cascades of flora and fauna. European in design and look, Busch Gardens Williamsburg has an element of class, style and sophistication. A great lineup of steel coasters, fabulous food at the Festhaus, and an atmosphere second to none make this park a real vacation getaway. What's missing are family-style flat rides and a wooden roller-coaster. Otherwise, this park is a great example of the ultimate theme park!

Ind.

7. INDIANA BEACH
Monticello, IN

In the middle of Indiana's corn country lies one of the most surprising, underrated and entertaining amusement parks in America. Indiana Beach is a classic boardwalk amusement park. It has all the classic flat rides, each with their own individual pier built right on the water. The park has three great dark rides including a very scary (and very dark!) walk through haunted house. There are wonderful boardwalk foodstands, an outdoor balcony bar with live music that overlooks the boardwalk and stays open after park hours, a glass-balcony, sit down restauraunt also overlooking the boardwalk, and plenty of convenient lodging available, all on-site! Best of all, Indiana Beach has four really fun roller-coasters. The Cornball Express is a wild, compact wooden coaster that just *makes* this park! I can't think of a single thing I'd change about this place. It is one of the finest old-fashioned amusement parks anywhere in America and one of Indiana's best kept secrets!

Silver

8. SILVER DOLLAR CITY
Branson, MO

Silver Dollar City was recently awarded "Best Theme Park" by IAAPA, the amusement industry's highest honor which is voted by its peers. It's easy to see why - this place is a model for all amusement parks to emulate. Free parking, affordable admission and food, friendly employees, efficient operations, original and great tasting foods, unique rides, wonderful shows, and inventive, immersive theming so intricate and detailed you feel completely removed from the outside world. This place is uniquely and amazingly themed, with historic buildings, bridges and landmarks blending seemlessly into the lush landscaping that perfectly captures the romanticism of the late 1800's. This is a family park with just the right mix of rides, shows and attractions to please everyone. The rides are run with great efficiency so there is never a long wait, and crowds here are extremely well-behaved. Everyone, including the employees, seems to have a wonderful time! The craftsmen and other "citizens of Silver Dollar City" all dress in period costume, and the theming here is so complex and immersive you may actually find yourself stumbling into an 1800's home only to find the family members actually sitting down to supper! Silver Dollar City is really quite a remarkable place - it's a place you'll never forget, and a place you'll always remember with a smile on your face. And that, my friends, is what an award winning park should do!

Holiday

9. HOLIDAY WORLD
Santa Claus, IN

What a hidden gem! Holiday World lacks all the theme park mentality found at bigger, more well-known theme parks. What you'll find here instead are the friendliest employees, rides that are well-maintained, ride ops that want you, the guest, to have fun, and customer service on a level not found in any other amusement park! Two of their exceptionally well-maintained wooden roller-coasters, The Raven and The Legend, are already at the top of many coaster enthusiasts' lists and ride the way wooden coasters are meant to ride! And Holiday World's new-for-2006 Thanksgiving section includes a new dark ride and a THIRD wooden coaster, The Voyage, ranked the No. 1 wooden coaster in the world! Liberal park policies put customer satisfaction first, with quick ride dispatches, no mid-course brakes or lights on their coasters, free parking, free tubes and towels in their waterpark, and unlimited free soft drinks thoughout the park! At Holiday World, the customer truly comes first!

Kennywood

10. KENNYWOOD
Pittsburgh, PA

Kennywood is a great, traditional amusement park, with roots that harken back to the old trolley days. It is impossible to have a bad day here. This park has carefully preseved its traditional heritage and is one of only two amusement parks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Kennywood's charm is abundant, characterized by several traditional midways, wonderful art deco architecture, plenty of great dark rides and three classic wooden roller-coasters. Lost Kennywood is the park's most recent expansion area and is a throwback to the old Luna Park days, featuring wonderful lights and elaborate fountains. Kennywood has top notch contemporary rides, too, including Exterminator, a spinning roller-coaster that is guaranteed to leave you laughing and very dizzy! And in 2001 the park unveiled the Phantom's Revenge, an amazing and highly successful redesign of the original 228 ft. Steel Phantom! This is a park I'd be happy to just sit on a bench and watch the goings-on without riding anything. Of course I'd never do that!

Top 10 Wood Coasters

Shivering Timbers

Shivering

1. SHIVERING TIMBERS
Michigan's Adventures, Muskegon, MI

Shivering Timbers is as close to the perfect roller-coaster as you'll get. It is an airtime machine. The first four hills defy the laws of physics and provide the most sustained airtime to be found on any roller-coaster in the world. It races nearly a mile away from the park, then turns back and dives under it's structure for the return run home. A continuous mix of short bunny hops provides even more airtime, and the designers threw in a bit of trick track for good measure. The ride has plenty of speed to burn at the end with an upward helix that demonstrates this coaster's incredible power. A roller-coaster enthusiast's dream. What a ride!

Boulder

2. BOULDER DASH
Lake Compounce, Bristol, CT

Boulder Dash is quite simply the most beautiful roller-coaster in the world. It is a stunning feat of engineering, design and construction, having been built directly into the side of a mountain with many of its footers poured directly into the gigantic boulders that dot the mountainside. It is an unbelieveable sight to behold, but don't let it's magnificent beauty fool you! It's wicked intensity delivers an out of control ride that makes this mountainside coaster one of the most unique and thrilling rides in the world! At night the coaster is peculiarly eerie, with a creepy and quiet ride up the mountainside lifthill, followed by an all-out romp that will leave you screaming and hanging on for your life! Coming up over a hill and seeing the train's shadow against some of those *too close* boulders is an unforgettable sight!

Tremors

3. TREMORS
Silverwood Theme Park, Athol, ID

Tremors has, without a doubt, the best and wildest beginning of any roller-coaster in the world! The train dives straight down into an underground tunnel through a glass-walled gift shop, then comes out of the tunnel and over a hill in which riders are catapulted into the air, then dives straight down into another underground tunnel, creating the illusion of imminent and certain decapitation! The train then shoots straight out of the second tunnel and makes a very sharp left turn, tossing already freaked out riders to the right and even further out of their seats! Tremors is ONE WILD RIDE of the very best kind - violent yet smooth, with unrelenting speed, great airtime and laterals, perfect pacing, surprising changes of direction and a total of four, count 'em, four underground tunnels! And yet as wild as this ride is, it is also completely rerideable! Tremors will leave you shaking!

Thunderhead

4. THUNDERHEAD
Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, TN

Thunderhead is a roller-coaster for the new brand of coaster enthusiast. The new brand of coaster riders don't want to get slammed into their side, they don't want to sit on an uncomfortable seat, and they don't want to get tossed out of it either. Newbie, Thunderhead was made for you! This massive hillside twisting coaster is smooth, easy to ride again and again, has a ton of floating airtime rather than ejector airtime, and has none of the extreme lateral forces found on older coasters that throw riders to their side. That's not to say Thunderhead isn't thrilling, because it most definitely is! This coaster has a fun factor that I haven't experienced on any other ride. Thunderhead isn't extreme, it's just extremely fun!

Phoenix

5. PHOENIX
Knoebels Groves, Elysburg, PA

It's all about fun! Phoenix is more pure fun than any other coaster I've ridden, from its tunnelled beginning to its airtime-filled ending. Everyone has their own reasons about which seat is the best and why. I like the front seat for its smooth ride and pure airtime. The Phoenix consistently delivers more moments of pure quality airtime than any other coaster I've ridden. It also has a great double up/double down combo followed by a jump into the turnaround that ejects riders so high it will have you screaming and hanging on for your life! The return run home is bunny hop heaven, with one airtime-filled hill after another that will leave you cheering and craving "one more ride!" Thanks to Knoebels for rescuing and restoring this classic double out and back coaster! So lower your buzz bar, raise your arms and enjoy the airtime - the Phoenix is phlat out phun!

Cornball

6. CORNBALL EXPRESS
Indiana Beach, Monticello, IN

Cornball Express may have a corny name but believe me, there's nothing funny about the ride. Folks, this is the real deal! This coaster packs all kinds of thrills into a very tight layout. Overcoming space limitations, Cornball Express is innovatively designed to pack a powerful punch within a short amount of space. It was built over, on top of, and through the Hoosier Hurricane and comes VERY close to the log flume - so close that about every fifth coaster train that goes by gets splashed by the flume! The coaster train was fitted with classic PTC buzz bars - proof positive that this park knows what it's doing. The ride has wonderful floating drops that send you out of your seat, hairpin turns that recreate driving through a mountain road at 50 mph, and great bunny hops that deliver serious pops of air time. The ending takes your breath away, with a lunging dive into a double helix, followed by two of the most intense bunny hops I have ever experienced! Guests who exit the ride nearly fall all over themselves running down the exit steps to get back in line, and to me that is the surest sign of a runaway hit. Major kudos and congratulations to Indiana Beach for doing things right and giving us one of the most innovative and exciting wooden coasters in ages!

Ozark

7. OZARK WILDCAT
Celebration City, Branson, MO

The Ozark Wildcat is a mid-size coaster that packs a powerful, intoxicating punch with its continuous turns, lifts, jogs and dips. There's not a piece of straight track on the entire ride until the very end, and before you get there you are treated to one surprising thrill after another. The front seat offers airtime city while the backseat is forever yanking you down in your seat. The Wildcat has a wonderful way of lifting you this way and throwing you that way, and near the end you are treated to one of the best coaster moments anywhere, with a surprising dip and jog to the left followed by two lightning quick, very peppy speed hills that toss riders out of their seats for a glorious, giggle-filled finish. The GCI trains are extremely comfortable, making this one of the most rerideable coasters anywhere. The lighting package at night is the best I've ever seen, with tracer lights chasing each other all over the coaster's structure. The Ozark Wildcat is an easy coaster to like, it is intensely fun, and it's thrills are so addicting you'll find yourself running back in line until they close the park! You'd be hard pressed to find another roller-coaster more enjoyable, more rerideable, more flat out fun!

Viper

8. VIPER
Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, IL

Viper is my pick as the most underrated roller-coaster in America. This design is based loosely on the Coney Island Cyclone in New York, however the emphasis here is on smooth drops and extreme airtime as opposed to the rough ride found on the original. Viper is a great ride with an emphasis on fun rather than fear! It delivers a peppy, twisted run through its structure, with a great double down and abundant airtime throughout the ride! The track is silky smooth which makes this coaster extremely rerideable. Kudos to Six Flags Great America for a truly great in-house design that deserves more attention as one of America's best wooden roller-coasters!

Timber

9. Timber Terror
Silverwood Theme Park, Athol, ID

Timber Terror is the perfect out and back. Every hill throws you completely out of your seat. It consists of a series of hills and drops, each one leaving your stomach in a different place than it was before. The front and back seats are especially enjoyable, offering riders more time out of their seats than in them. The first drop is steep and sends you floating out of your seat. It then goes over a rabbit hop before heading into a double up. The double up is followed by yet another floating drop which descends into the structure, creating an excellent head chopper to accompany the airtime! The coaster then circles around to the back run and heads through another series of bunny hops. The ride finishes with a bang, too: just when you think you've come to the end you're surprised with an intense helix that starts out unbanked and gradually turns riders inward toward the middle of the helix, then finishes you off with a short bunny hop just before the brake! This really is a powerfully fun ride and is the best example of a classic old fashioned out-and-back woodie appeal: up and down, up and down.

The

10. THE LEGEND (of Sleepy Hollow)
Holiday World, Santa Claus, IN

The wildest ride of any coaster I've ridden, The Legend is truly a fitting name for this unforgettable experience! An absolutely BRILLIANT design, Legend is non-stop speed and action that will leave you breathless after every ride! The double up is by far the best ever designed, and the section that immediately follows is frighteningly wild and out of control! You feel as if you're being chased by the headless horseman! Four enormously loud tunnels create a nightmarish effect on your brain. The ride's finale features four very fast changes of direction with an up and down, side to side action that can only be described as insanity on wheels. In 2002 The Legend went to two train operation with PTC trains, which provides passengers with a much more comfortable ride. Even then, there'll be no escaping the headless horseman. Be prepared to hang on for your life!

Top 10 Steel Coasters

Superman: Ride of Steel

Superman

1. SUPERMAN: RIDE OF STEEL
Six Flags New England, Agawam, MA

It's as simple as this: Superman is the perfect roller-coaster. There will never be a better steel roller-coaster built because Superman is truly a perfect ride. It has a 208 ft. lift and a 220 ft. first drop into an underground, mist-filled tunnel. What follows after that is hill after glorious hill, with airtime in the extreme over every single drop. You'll spend more time out of your seat than in it on Superman, and you simply cannot believe how smooth the ride is. The simple restraint system gives riders a wonderful feeling of freedom that invites you to throw caution to the wind, put your hands up and enjoy what is undoubedtly the finest steel roller-coaster in the world! Enjoy the ride because it doesn't get any better than this!

Superman

2. SUPERMAN: RIDE OF STEEL
Six Flags America, Largo, MD
Six Flags Darien Lake, Darien Center, NY

Wow! This coaster was the prototype for it's bigger, better brother at Six Flags New England, but don't think for a second that this ride is obsolete! It thrills everyone with it's wild, 70 degree first drop and incredible negative g's. The second hill provides sustained floater airtime all the way to the bottom, while the third hill ejects its riders with incredible force! Two helices - one works, the other doesn't, separate the middle and ending of the ride. The final three rabbit hops - they are much too large to consider them bunny hops! - leave you bug-eyed, breathless and amazed at the brilliance of this ride. Intamin perfected their design in the New England version, but Superman's first flight is an incredibly thrilling, unforgettable experience on its own.

Nitro

3. NITRO
Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, NJ

Nitro is the latest and easily the greatest offer from Bollinger and Mabillard, the brilliant Swiss designers who introduced the world to inverted roller coasters with Batman: The Ride. Their latest creation, deemed a mega coaster, features tilt back seating and a single pad restraint that gives the rider a feeling of freedom not found on any other coaster. Nitro is a brilliant hyper coaster design, with quick changes of direction, constantly changing degrees of drops, a terrific helix, and a pace that never lets up, all wrapped up in a smooth and graceful ride with the precision we've come to expect from the Swiss design team of B&M. Nitro is THE steel coaster of 2001!

Dueling

4. DUELING DRAGONS
Islands of Adventure, Orlando, FL

These dragons breathe fire and ice, but both rides are hot. Ice Dragon is really only superior in front, where a sudden encounter with the castle wall will make you scream and pull your feet back. That wall is too close for comfort! Fire Dragon is the better ride of the two, with a camelback that gives surprising airtime in the backseat, and sharper g-forces than those experienced on Ice. Both sides come together in a face to face encounter that is one of the greatest coaster moments ever. After that, Ice Dragon peters out at the end, and riders can only sit and watch as Fire Dragon riders receive an additional heartline inversion to end the ride. A great, very fun visual coaster experience!

Incredible

5. INCREDIBLE HULK
Islands of Adventure, Orlando, FL

It is a thrill just to stand on the Marvel Bridge and watch The Incredible Hulk in action. It is my favorite looking steel coaster. And the ride itself is nothing to sneeze at either! A slow climb up and through a tunnel suddenly accelerates into a full-fledged launch, and the instant the train blasts through the tunnel riders are immediately turned upside down and hurtled straight toward the ground! This ride has huge vertical loops, a great dive into a mist-filled tunnel, a fantastic cobra roll, and great changes of direction, with a nice downward S-turn right before the train hops up onto the mid-course brake. The pacing is a bit odd, though, as the second half is somewhat shorter than the first, but the train quickly drops off the mid-course brake, sending riders out of their seats and heading into a corkscrew finale. I absolutely love watching The Hulk fly through its elements. My favorite sit-down looper. Apollo's

6. APOLLO'S CHARIOT
Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Williamsburg, VA

Airtime, airtime, airtime. That's the feast that Apollo's Chariot feeds it's riders. It features an ultra-smooth, slickly engineered B&M designed track that doesn't have a rough or challenging moment, and it doesn't need one. Apollo delivers exactly what it's supposed to - one great hill after another. There are some nice directional changes but its most abundant and memorable features are its toss-you-up-in-the-air-like-a-baby negative g's. The open, tilted-back seating accentuates this effect even more!

Phantom's

7. PHANTOM'S REVENGE
Kennywood, Pittsburgh, PA

Kennywood has truly listened to its customers and given them what they want. They took the old Steel Phantom, a 228 ft. hyper coaster, kept the best parts of the ride and got rid of the worst. Gone are the inversions and over the shoulder restraints that caused riders so much dissions and over the shoulder restraints that caused riders so much discomfort. In its place is an exciting lap-bar-only hyper coaster containing the same two frightening first drops from the original, one of them an 85 mph, 228 ft. drop, and now an inversion-free second half, featuring a trench, a double dip, and plenty of airtime-filled drops that make use of the existing terrain and the nearby Thunderbolt roller-coaster. This brilliant reincarnation is called the Phantom's Revenge, and at Kennywood, Revenge is oh so sweet!

MF

8. MILLENNIUM FORCE
Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH

Cartoonish in appearance, Millennium Force is the first roller-coaster to break the 300 ft. height barrier. Its many other high points include a fast and frighteningly steep lift hill, an 82 degree first drop that for all intents and purposes feels like 90, impossibly banked turns that tilt riders on their side and come *this* short of being an inversion, and incredible speed that reaches over 90 mph. In addition, two parabolic hills produce wonderful, sustained floatage, and another bunny hop gives riders a great pop of ejector airtime. The panoramic view of Lake Erie only adds to the surreal magnificence of this coaster's setting.

Magnum

9. MAGNUM XL-200
Cedar Point, Sandusky, OH

Magnum XL-200 is the original hyper coaster. Built by Arrow Dynamics in 1990, it is the first steel roller-coaster to break the 200ft. height barrier. It's magnificent setting affords riders an outstanding view of Lake Erie, but once the train begins its descent down that first drop all thoughts of pretty views disappear. What replaces the view is hill after hill of extreme, intense ejector airtime. This coaster makes use of its three tunnels better than any other hyper coaster, and the final tunnel contains a great, airtime filled bunny hop that makes for a memorable ending. Magnum isn't quite as smooth as some of the newer, Intamin-designed hyper coasters, but it's an unforgettable ride and still the favorite of many after all these years!

Raging

10. RAGING BULL
Six Flags Great America, Gurnee, IL

Raging Bull is one of three mega coasters from the Swiss design team of B&M, and not surprisingly, one of three B&Ms in my top ten! This version features a twister layout as opposed to the out and back layouts of Nitro and Apollo's Chariot. Wide, sweeping turns and big drops are the hallmark of this ride. Its first drop goes 200 ft. straight down into a tunnel. The track plays out in front of the queue, tantalizing those getting ready to ride. Again, the wonderfully open tilt back seating makes riders feel vulnerable, yet exhilaratingly free!
