WELCOME TO

Steve Mahlberg's DX Page

Hello. I am Steve Mahlberg.
I have been an avid AM DXer or listener of long distance radio stations on AM, FM radio and TV since 1975.
My older brothers introduced me to the hobby as I watched them or listened in as they tuned an old clock radio for DX.
I was surprised by what they were hearing and for whatever reason listening to DX was appealing to me.
I did a lot of TV DXing when my family moved to Minnesota from New Jersey in 1976.
I also was listening to FM radio Eskip and meteor scatter as well as waiting for the tropos openings.
AM DXing became even more fun as I started to record my DX catches more so in 1985 and onward.
Most of the clips I have compiled are from post 1985.
Back in 1980 or around there, my mom bought me a Hammarlund HQ-145A which was my DX rig for many solid years.
In the last couple of years since 2010, I started DXing on some antique table and floor model radios from the 1930s. They are pretty easy to fix, sometimes, but are decent DX receivers with a modest antenna.
After the early 2000s, family life and living in the city started to hinder my excitement for the radio hobby.
In town manmade noise, light fixture noise and the sort make for DXing at some of the "prime times" near impossible.
As I mentioned, I did just start DXing more so again, as of 2010.
I am getting my Drake R-8 receiver repaired as a couple of capacitors likely burnt out in it.
That and my recent purchase of (2/11/22) a C Crane twin coil to experiment with.
I will be posting reports from that as they arise.
Because I live in a very noisy location in Duluth, MN, I plan to take my Tecsun PL380 or the Drake after she is fixed and do a lot of roadtrip DXing.
At least up hill and away from immediate powerline city noise.
So, I plan to become an avid AM DX enthusiast again.
So far this year I have heard a couple of low power stations from Missouri.
KLTI 1560 Macon, MO 41 watts
and KTUI 1560 Sullivan, MO 25 watts.
Auroral conditions were pretty good to allow me to hear those two stations!

Starting my logs over and all of that.
I still have the awesome radio dx catches in audio format to share with others.

I am rebuilding this site which is dedicated to posting AM radio DX audio clips I have collected over the years since I started AM DXing in 1976.
Included will be some information I learned as well as a collection of audio clips from recordings of radio stations as received from my home locations in Duluth, Minnesota.

while I rebuild and reupload soundclips here, please check out the link below.

Here is
Radio DXing Duluth MN
page, which has some more of my DX clips
