The Significance of the Number Seven
Written by Margaret Odrowaz-Sypniewska, B.F.A.

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS:

  1. Pride ~ An exaggerated opinion of one's own worth.
  2. Avarice/Greed ~ An immoderate desire for earthly goods.
  3. Lust ~ Desire for immoral pleasures.
  4. Anger ~ An inordinate feeling or expression of displeasure.
  5. Gluttony ~ Intemperate use of food or drink.
  6. Envy ~ A feeling of resentment over another's attainments, endowments or possesions.
  7. Sloth ~ Laziness or carelessness in doing right and in practicing virtue.

THE MOVIE SE7EN:

Se7en (1995), THE MOVIE, explores the mind of a serial killer (dubbed John Doe), who uses the "Seven Deadly Sins" as his motive for his crimes of passion. The movie begins with "Gluttony" and has a surprise ending. Se7en never bores and though it has a dark subject, it makes you want to see more. The movie moves along at a fast pace, and is never boring. Admittedly, the graphic potrayal of the various crime scenes are not for the weak-hearted, or for younger viewers. Each victim signifies the sin for which he is killed, in the mind of the killer.

The cast is impressive:
