St Wolfgang

St. Wolfgang's (925-994) feast day is October 31th. He was born circa 924/925 in Pfullingen, Swabia (Schwaben), Germany, and was the son of a free, but not rich family. Wolfgang attended monastery school in Reichenau, where he studied with the Benedictines of Reichenau Abbey in Lake Constance; and the Cathedral School at Würtzberg. Wolfgang's Uncle Poppo was the Bishop and Chancellor of Würzberg.

In 956, Wolfgang taught at the Cathedral School in Trier, where he was also deacon of the Cathedral; and Trier. In 956 he was the Archbishop of Trier. In 965, Wolfgang entered the Benedictine Monastery at Einsiedeln, in Switzerland. In 971, he was consecrated as a priest by Bishop Ulrich of Augsburg. Wolfgang preached to the Magyars of Hungary, which wasn't successful. Then in 972, he was appointed Bishop of Regensberg by Emperor Otto II.

Wolfgang oversaw the restoration of the Abbey of St. Emmeran and appointed Ramould of Trier their Abbot. Wolfgang was generous to the poor.

Wolfgang was the tutor of the children of Henry :the Quarrelsome," the Duke of Bavaria. He tutores the future Henry II. Because Wolfgang remained true to Emperor Otto, at the Rebellion of Henry, he had to leave Regensberg at Mondsee, Upper Austrei in 976 or 977.

Wolfgang died October 31, 994 in Puppingen near Linz and Eferding. He was canonized in 1022.
