Joel has been making and recording music for eight years now. He was in the bands Bait and Null Set ('96-'97) where he played Bass, and keyboards/samples. Needing to showcase thier experimental jams Joel and fellow band member, Jeremy put together a small studio for the recording of thier Null Set tapes, and shortly after graduating highschool released the Noble Gasses ep This was when Joel started recording more seriously, and eventually left Null Set to start Logic System Labs.
LSL started off slowly, being more of a personel studio for Joel's music projects. He recorded and released an early version of the Innercity Camoflage and 20-Bit Religion cd's and also some things for his college video classes.
In the spring of '99 Joel attended the Recording Institute of Ohio to learn the fine art of Audio Engineering.

Joel graduated from the spring '99 class in the top 90%. He then completed the three optional courses; in Advanced recording, Pro Tools (new tech) and Studio Maintenece. Upon returning from school Joel started putting LSL together more like a collective. He branched out to include local artists: 4th Floor Productions, (which handles this site, and post production work), and filled out the early roster of artists, most noticably were; Big ol' Britches, Radiofon, nimbus, and the Deviance Coalition. These combined with projects Joel was involved with Sub.Tech. and skelatin, started organizing and playing shows together. At this time LSL was mostly electronic and dance orientated and many members were invited to play raves across the state.

These pictures were taken at "Bughunt" in February of 2002, in Kalamazoo, MI. At this time Joel was busy organizing and recording live shows for the LSL crew. We brought some mics and set up the chillout room at Bughunt with the help of the Deviance Coalition. We recorded some tribal precusion, live P.A., dj's and Mc's, and mixed it all live to cd.
Joel was also doing live recording and FOH mixing for skullaton, Sub.Tech. and others at weekly shows at Arco Iris in downtown Grand Rapids. At this point in time ( winter-summer of 2001) LSL was located at the 908 address. This was the tiny apartment that Joel and Jeremy started releasing cd's out of. The next four releases from LSL (2-5) came out of here. Joel and Jeremy also broadened LSL's reach by working with many musicians and rappers who lived in the complex, and still has a strong presence there.
That summer Joel, Jeremy, and now Brent moved LSL out of 908 and into the 5015 address. This house allowed LSL to record live drums and guitars again, and Joel started shifting to more professional preamps, and mics. This was the turning point at LSL as almost everything recorded now was organic. LSL still has a strong electronic pressence but now is mostly punk/experimental/and indie orientated., and involves alot more bands and people.

The Apollo Kids, Gummi Bums and Skellatuhn, made up the bulk of the recordings going on in the studio, in the spring of 2002. These finally allowed Joel to take advantage of everything he learned in school as he was now recording full bands live, and with overdubs, just like the professional independent studios. He continued live recordings of these bands also, this time with stereo mics. LSL started putting together demo packages for these bands with both studio and live tracks.
By this time the LSL collective had grown to include many fine musicians and artists in the Grand Rapids scene, and many of these artists would contribute to a number of side projects here at LSL. Songs without bands, if you will.

The second date project was one of these sessions. In the near future LSL is planning to release a number of these sessions and songs on some new compilations. In the summer of 2002, Joel started recording the live poetry slams at the UICA, (Urban Institute for Creative Arts) and at Morning Star coffee house in EastTown. The slams featured a number of acoustic acts and performance artists as well as the poetry. LSL became familar with the local performance art scene and produced a few demos for them, as well as releasing some of thier albums. (EchoKnock StopSign and AquaSkull's God is Gay?)

By the following fall LSL had moved its studios to the main level of the house. This was the last thing LSL needed before becoming a comercial project studio, space. Moving to the main floor freed up the many side rooms pictured in most of the pictures. We now had two large tracking rooms, one with all hardwood floors, 3 isolation closets, the front porch (screened and glass), the bathroom, and virtually anywhere we could run a mic cable. We cut a window from the main control room in December 2002 to finish the transformation.
Joel finally had his studio up and running, this was where most of the bands were recorded. Arkum, I Don't Know Man, and One Less Future to name a few, have recorded thier demos or albums here. Joel has doubled the amount of albums LSL has released from this spot in the course of about a year. Bringing the total to 15 Logic System Labs releases. (as of june 2003)

UPDATE:09-12-05 LSL Studio is finally fully profesional. The new studio is now tricked out with two iso booths, a drum room, and a gtr room, and the master control suite. This is where the magic happens now. The music is flowing and the bands keep pouring in.
