Carlos' Corner: At the movies
A great evening out for A's rookie Peņa
By Carlos Peņa / Special to MLB.com

Carlos Peņa, a 23-year-old rookie heralded as one of the top prospects in the game, was acquired by Oakland during the offseason in a six-player trade with Texas. He's the A's starting first baseman, and he's providing for MLB.com an exclusive daily diary for the 2002 season.

Prior to Tuesday's game against Boston, Peņa talked about going to see 'Spiderman,' and how little things like a movie can make for a perfect night.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Saturday night after the game in Chicago, we went to watch 'Spiderman.' I had been looking forward to this movie -- it had seemed so cool looking at the previews and I was so excited.

It had been a long time since I was that excited to go to the movies.

I went to the movie with Brandon Buckley, who is our bullpen catcher, Mike Colangelo and Clarence Cockrell, our strength coach. We had such a great time. You come out of there, and you want to be Spiderman, it's the funniest thing.

I remember going to Universal Studios and getting on the Spiderman ride, it was my favorite, which is one of the reasons I was excited about watching the movie. I was curious to see how well done it would be --the special effects and all those things.

I definitely felt like a little, little kid watching this movie, and I'm not afraid to be a little kid. I was out there just laughing hard, because when I get excited, I start laughing -- I just can't stop.

So I'm just watching the movie, and through the whole movie, I'm going 'Oh my God, Oh my God, this is awesome.' Days like that I don't forget.

Yesterday, I had a day off and I actually wanted to go watch it again, but I didn't.

So everybody I see I tell them 'Go watch Spiderman,' 'You gotta go see Spiderman,' I called my brother and told him 'You gotta go see Spiderman.'

It was just such a simple thing -- getting away that night and going to the movies. It's funny how sometimes the simplest things to me make me the most happy. I was so happy that night.

It was just a great time, and you don't get that kind of feeling that often. I don't know if it's just me but I so excited sometimes, and the happiest moments of my life have come doing the simplest things in the world. It might just be hanging out with my friends and doing nothing.

That night stuck out as one of the happiest so far this season. A movie, popcorn and a Coke -- just the simplest thing.

Carlos Peņa's diary appears as told to Kent Schacht, an editorial producer for MLB.com. This story was not subject to approval by Major League Baseball or its clubs.
