Peņa's parents came to New York from their home in the New England area for the A's three-game series with the Yankees, and after Thursday's series finale, Peņa's father Felipe talked at length about watching his son play in the Major Leagues for the first time. In the second part of three guest appearances in 'Carlos' Corner' Felipe Peņa talks about keeping track of Carlos' progress from across the country.
NEW YORK -- Thus far I have watched Carlos' Major League experience from far away. My wife and I, we have been watching Carlos' games on TV whenever we can, which is when he's on ESPN mostly.
But what I usually do is follow the games on the internet through MLB.com's audio system. I listen to the games every single night -- even though it's usually really late because of the time difference between the west and the east. So I need to keep myself up -- sometimes until 2 in the morning.
My wife always says to me "You need to go to sleep," but it is something that we've always done -- since Carlos started playing in the minor leagues, and now we do it in the Major Leagues.
Our concern is to be sure that he is healthy, that he is playing. I like to know he's in the game, because we deduce from it that if he's playing, he's healthy.
Always we listen to the game, or watch until the game is over, I am more comfortable knowing that the game is over and everything is ok for him.
Felipe Peņa 's diary appears as told to Kent Schacht, who is a editorial producer for MLB.com. This story was not subject to approval by Major League Baseball or its clubs.
