All About Chemistry - (UNI/MCA)
Semisonic return after having enjoyed a degree of success with their previous Feeling Strangely Fine and it's hit Closing Time. However, All About Chemistry doesn't bring anything new to the table - or even anything particularly interesting.
While the opening Chemistry is a pretty decent piece of piano pop, things begin to fall apart early with the funk attempt of Bed and the techno-inspired guitar of Sunshine And Chocolate. Interspersed throughout are ballads that seem intent on being as ordinary as possible - there just isn't anything about Act Naturally or One True Love that would warrant another listening.
Occasionally, there is reason to give the old "'A' for effort" comment, but that's part of All About Chemistry's problem. Aside from the opening track and the cool groove of Follow, the bulk of the material here sounds like recordings that get left off of final products. The musicianship is fairly solid here, but never enough to add life to most of these songs.
Hopefully, this is turn out to be just a weak installment for a band that has usually has more to offer.
