Promised Hand

You were promised a hand, but you're walking alone
Left clinging to the shadows, no rays of light or hope
No figures waiting deep down under the stairs
Hands outstretched, holding you, showing they care

Numb. Words dumb. Your mind searching, stunned
Run. Find a smoother path. Flee from your thumb
Tripped, now you’re broken, torn apart by the floor
Climb up, scramble, find the smiles behind the door

Light breaks through, dappling the surface, patterns emerge
Happy days ahead? Don’t count your hens, let heart surge
As soon as smiles appear, they’ll smell your fears trapped
And bring them to life, before your naive eyes, love sapped,

From your essence, your being, core, heart and soul
Leaving nothing inside, nothing, but a deep, dark hole
Lost control, you stumble around, writhing insane, crazy
Grabbing the pills, thrown down your throat, eyes now hazy

Slipping away, smile drowns your face, suffocating lace
Last tear falls, bounces off the floor, no one saw your real face
Your calls echoing from your pain, resounding sound yet unheeded
The hand you were promised fell, when most needed

No one even noticed when you went, not a ripple of response
I’m sorry they didn’t, but I saw, I held you, more than once
But you didn’t see my efforts, thought you were alone
No I’m left on the shelf, waiting for help, wanting to go home
