Pressure Valve

Just when I think I have you all worked out
You do something crazy, stereotypes to doubt
The person I thought I understood gone, a new friend forming
Do you like me still the same, or is this now a warning
Warning me away, to find pastures anew while you form within
Old flame dying out, venomous sparks that scald the naked skin
Like a snake shedding painfully, nothing the same, nothing the same
Old skin gone, banished like a dangerous dog that hides insatiable rage

I watch from the shadows, the sidelines my place to stay, watching while you play
I used to be your comfort blanket, now strewn carelessly, why do you want me away?
I’ll leave as you please, but if you need me, just whistle and I’ll be immediately adjacent
It all boils down to the one crazy thing that shook the comfort zone, you need to relent
On the pressure valve holding you to the changes made, you can never go back now
Only you can correct it, all I am able to do is assist, scrape up the scattered pieces somehow
I can’t and I won’t save you from yourself, but I will never leave you though I know I should
You’ve taken what you knew was wrong, made it your own, labelled it strangely good

Condoning would be futile, but I do understand how attractive the prospects
Shame you didn’t think of the side effects, too late now. Lesson learnt? Please reflect
I love you too much to leave you to your misery, let me help stabilise where I can
Hold fast to the good memories, let the sordid go, running through your mind like sand
We’re finally getting somewhere, the crazy moment far behind, many happy to savour
Pressure dying out, a leak in the valve just in time arrived, fizzling, dispersing, sweet flavour
Valve broken, pressure gone, being yourself now fun, we’ve won together, triumphant victory
Tears of joy at the start of the new path, I’m in ecstasy being here with you, floating; happy; free
