Once Bitten, Twice Wise

At first glance it’s innocent, well displayed
Second glance, something’s wrong, but you don’t know what
Curiosity breeds the third look, flaws appearing, cracking porcelain
Doubts raise questions, pushed ungraciously aside
Hooked to the allure of what you know you shouldn’t see
It captivates the imagination of naivety shattered, battered and torn

The black hole gapes open, ready to be indulged, to suck you in
Continuous visits to viewing, each time, you wait for the next
Hoping to not be caught, great lengths taken to remain anonymous
Being destroyed from within, a mutiny of the heart
Your precious conscience screaming to no avail for you to stop
You’ve gone too far

Succumbed to the curiosity, knowing now how wrong this is
But owned by it, needing it to get through the day
The instant hit you think you need, please walk away
I know you are untouchable, but it doesn’t have to be so
Familiarity breeds contempt, you begin to hate
Hating the lies, the hiding, the addiction that owns you

Shame preventing you from seeking aid in turning around
Going back, not the way you came, to before first glance
The painful path stretched forth, rocks waiting to trip you
But determined you take the first tentative steps
The place you were, calling your name, willing you to give up
Close your ears, concentrate, focus on freedom, taste it

What’s in you mind will never be lost, but it can be hidden
Pushed down into the deepest depths of the subconscious
Not begging to be remembered anymore,
Or to be shown on the stage of your mind, indulged

Your innocence can never be re-attained
But it can be as though you never looked where you shouldn’t
Don’t ever let it resurface, take hold, it will drown you
Push it from your mind as soon as it emerges, trying to re-infect
