Eternal Letdown

The one who fails no matter how hard they persevere
The one who wants to please everyone but knowing they never will
The one who puts all their eggs in one small basket, hoping they’ll hatch
Into successes rather than the repetitive failures they’ve learned to hate

Yet unperturbed they persist, not wanting to be the let down they’re labelled
So even if they started to succeed the very next day, the label would stick
Dragging down their fragile self esteem
Making them eventually believe they can be nothing more then they are at present
They’re told that’s all they can ever achieve

Like fleas in a circus, trained to remain imprisoned by their mind
Triumph the unobtainable, damned by others expectations
Forced to underachieve because no one thinks they can do any better
So they don’t

Eventually they break free of the limitations placed upon them
Realising finally they can do better, regardless of others views
Taking the first leap, willing with all their might for it to work
They forgot to tiptoe, first test the water, look before they leapt
Tripping, tumbling, fingers pointing the ‘I told you so’

Crushed, back where they were, not wanting to try again, for fear of the fall
Spirit broken, bruised, no comfort when they disobeyed the rules
If they don’t try, then the chance to fail is removed from existence
Safety rushes back, soothing them to remain steadfast in denial
