Silence captured by it’s essence
Strangers meet, wary of their presence
Conversation floods from the tiny springs
That with it, new friendship brings
Maze of discoveries, exciting yet haunted
By pain unknown, yet it dictates not thwarted
What is divulged and what is hidden
From the ear of the beholder of knowledge down trodden
Time passes like a candle gently burning
Wax dripping, scalding their souls, hearts churning
Both so eager to learn about the other but knowing
They can’t give the game away with too much showing
Countless layers unravelled one by one
Revealing scars not healed, wounds not gone
One uses the trust gained to learn more
Secrets spilling like blood on the floor
Used and abused, their crumbling naivety shattered
Wishing they’d kept their secrets safe, not plastered
For all to see, to know the truth once in hiding
How can they trust again, when betrayal is binding
Forbidding them to make the same mistake again
Yet knowing their yearning for company will be the same
Distrust sprouts from the dull ache, forcing them to the shadows
Keeping up appearances, smiling through the pain, eyes shallow
Picking up the pieces, sticking them back together gradually
Keeping others at a safe distance, the walls their new armoury
No one can see the anguish buried in their soul which can’t escape
The cycle complete, back to the beginning, a new ending create
