SUMMER VACATION

2001

Josh and William at Tahquamenon Falls (Day 4)

We spent July 2- 7 in the eastern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan – here’s a diary of what we did/saw.
Click on the links for pictures and more details.

Day 1 – We left home at about 7 AM. Stopped for breakfast in Grand Rapids, lunch in St. Ignace, then made a beeline for Sault Saint Marie, MI. We went across the Mackinac Bridge to get there! Once we got there, we found our hotel, unpacked the van, and then went to do a little sightseeing. We saw a big boat going through the Soo Locks!

Then we went back to the hotel, ate dinner, and went swimming in a really warm pool (90 degrees!)

Day 2 – The weather looked a little iffy, so we decided to drive around and do some sightseeing by van. We saw the Point Iroquois Light Station, Whitefish Point Lighthouse and Shipwreck Museum, and had a picnic lunch on Whitefish Bay (in the van because the blackflies were TERRIBLE).

Once again, back to the hotel, dinner, and an even warmer pool (96 degrees!)

Day 3 – Fourth of July! We went to the Museum Ship "Valley Camp", a parade in a little town called Brimley, a museum about the eastern U.P. (also in Brimley), then back to Sault Saint Marie for ANOTHER parade. It started raining before they shot off fireworks, though.

Day 4 – Packed up the van, and headed for Newberry, MI for the rest of our vacation. Along the way we stopped at Tahquamenon Falls (Upper and Lower). Then we went to our campsite and set up our home away from home (courtesy of a KOA Kamping Kabin)

Day 5 – Daddy finally got to see BEARS. We went to Oswald’s Little Bear Acres, and the Seney National Wildlife Refuge .

Then back to camp – tried to go swimming but the water was COLD.

Day 6 – Packed up and headed for home. Saw the north shore of Lake Michigan along the way.

It was a fun trip, but we were really glad to be home!
