Minutes of Hackert Lake Association Board Meeting
November 18, 2002

Meeting called to order at 7:07 p.m. by President Bob Haupt
Nine (9) present: Bob Haupt, Nedra Haupt, Harold Kling, Sandy Steckel, Tony Swider, Sam James, Gail Kowalski, John Ochs, Linda Ochs

Treasurer’s Report: Current Balance $851.08. Anticipated expenditures: $600.00 to WSCC for lake study. Association dues will be collected after January, 2003 and will increase our treasury balance.

NEW BUSINESS:

Incentives to increase membership were discussed. Sandy Steckel suggested we send a survey sheet along with the dues letter which will be sent in January. Survey sheet would contain various questions for the purpose of attaining ideas and feedback from lake residents on how to improve HLA and what they would like to see happen to improve our lake and/or the association. Follow-up phone calls and a letter signed by board members were also suggested.

Sandy Steckel suggested we have a “Sunshine Person” to send “Get-Well or Thinking of You” cards to residents when appropriate. Jane Jesuale will fill that position. Jane’s address is 1704 Chilberg Rd, Scottville, MI 49454 Phone #757-0198. If anyone knows of someone having surgery, someone ill, etc. they should contact Jane.
Discussion regarding how a state-designated Lake Board operates, including the ability to assess fees.

President Bob Haupt stated he had met with Ron Monroe (DNR) to discuss methods of collecting fees at the Public Access Ramp and limited watercraft parking. Nothing definite was decided at this meeting, but Ron is open to suggestions and input from our association. Ron also stated that there is a lot of pending legislation pertaining to personal watercraft.

Bob Haupt ask that Secretary Shirley Salas send a letter of Thank You to Ron Monroe for his help this past year, ie. placement of garbage cans and parking signs at the public access.

OLD BUSINESS:

Bob Haupt reported this year’s Fathead Minnow Project appears to be a success. The remote pond was stocked with 1,000 of the original 20,000 minnows purchased. Over the course of the summer, he removed 3,000 minnows from the pond for additional stocking of Hackert Lake. It remains to be seen if the minnows will survive the winter, but if they do and continue to reproduce in the pond and our lake, we will have an ongoing success. General opinion is that we have a successful project with positive effects.

Eurasian milfoil is out of control. Needs to be dealt with. Possible options: 1. Chemical treatment. 2. Harvest with machine. 3. Distribution of Beetles. Beetle distribution is probably the most effective solution but it is costly. Sam James will check his home files for information concerning specific cost. Bob cited Pleiness Lake as example of how to control milfoil and the cost.
Watershed Project will be put on hold until early 2003.

Schedule of 2003 events and meetings will be decided at January meeting of the Board to be held on Monday, January 13th, @ 7:00 p.m.

Meeting adjourned.
