Click here to see how I grow these. Opuntia 'Smithwick'

'Smithwick' is a selection from Claude Barr, and is quite probably a wild hybrid between O. fragilis and possibly O. polyacantha. The flowers are a typical yellow, but they are huge for the size of the pads, and the plant covers itself with them. This plant produces more flowers than any others I know of, possibly because it is a hybrid. This plant was purchased and planted around October, 1995, and has been there ever since. It has been completely hardy here.

This plant came from the Michigan Cactus and Succulent Society's plant sale. This is a great source of cuttings and potted plants.
