Keams (Q): Please state your name and the crew(s) you represent.
Detek (A): DETEK ý TAKEN SOUTH CITIES þ
Detek at "Miracle On 34th Street"
Keams (Q): When, where, and why did you get into the art form know
as graffiti? In addition, how did
you come up with your tag, and if you had another tag before the one you have
now, what was it?
Detek (A): I got into graff in 1992, I lived in the Ridge and there were so many
abandoned buildings that it sorta came naturally.
Honer gave me my tag when I was getting into HA at the time I was writing up
Sake, but there already was a sake in HA crew.So I dropped it, and started
throwing up Dtek.
Keams (Q): Who got you started and who do you look up to for a "role
model"? Also, who do you think is
running shit with respect to bombing, piecing, etc.?
Detek (A): For the most part I got myself into Graff...Linking up with Atomik in
Junior High started setting shit off..
..As far as who is running shit with peicing, , TSC, MSG, DAM AIM, DD,
TE,
and Bombing, hmm, MECS, DTEK, TVEE, STV. ..I live down south so I don’t get
to see all of Miami’s tagz.
Keams (Q): Who are your favorite people to go painting with? Also,
who are your favorite artists or favorite crews?
Detek (A): I like Painting with My Crew, the Most... besides some exceptions, I rarely
paint outside of the crew. You have to trust the people you paint with,
whether it’s piecing or Bombing.
I have always liked WOW crew and INK HEADS, they held it down Hard as fuck.
DAM, and MSG seem to got there shit together.
Keams (Q): What do you like the most about graff and why? What do
you have to say about the graff scene inMiami?
Detek (A): The scene in MIAMI has diminished lots, but seeing it that way gives me
motivation to go bombing. I love graff mainly for the challenges that are
involved. Also for the rush, the recognition, and the memories!!!
It helps me get through the daily routine. I need something in my life to
make each day different from the other. I don’t look at graff as a hobby,
more like an obsession .
Keams (Q): How has your style changed over the years? How has graff
changed over the years?
Detek (A): My get-ups have improved alot, I can do them quicker, bigger, and cleaner. I
try to keep my bombing BIG. *THE BIGGER THE BETTER
Keams (Q): What do your parents and friends (not into graff) think
about your graffiti?
Detek (A): When I was younger, my parents used to love graff. They looked at it as
something constructive and something that would keep me off druggz. My mom
used to buy me silvers from K-mart. But now, they think I am a loser. They
see my name on walls around town and they think I am asking to get bagged.
Keams (Q): How has graff changed your life? Has it changed it in a
positive or negative way?
Detek (A): Deffinetly in a positive way. It keeps me away from doing other things that
could be worse. I don’t seem to get in trouble because of graff, so I don’t
look at it as negative at all.
Keams (Q): Do you feel that graff is vandalism or an art form that
the cops, media, and almost
everyone else just can't understand?
Detek (A): Graff is deffinetly vandalism, and society for the most part cant understand
it. But I like it that way. Fuck the cops ... Graff is just one of the many
forms of vandalism.
Keams (Q): Some people say that graff should have no part in the hip
hop culture... what do u think?
Detek (A): Who cares, I know the 2 are usually associated with each other though. I
think graff is an an element of Hip-Hop. But I don’t think hip-hop is an
element of Graff. Just my opinionz.
Keams (Q): What part of the world do you think is the best to paint
in? Also, what part has thefreshest writers?
Ive only painted in Miami, And Tallahassee. I like painting in Miami. (Keams adds... Detek has now painted in Gainesville, FL over this past weekend of November 11, 2000 @ the Beyond Extreme graffiti event "Miracle On 34th Street".)
Detek (A): I hope to paint sometime in the near future on the west coast. Like LA, and
San Fran... A lot of dope Crews have come outta there.
I would also like to paint Atlanta,, Detroit, and New York Of course.
Belive it or not, but the FR8 scene in Buffalo is off the chain.
But I Love MIAMI!!!
Keams (Q): Please tell me what graffiti means to you, along with one
word that describes it.
Detek (A): Graffiti is the only thing that I’ve been able to stick to without ever
quitting. I have much Love for the whole graff Scene... One word that
describes it. 24/7
Keams (Q):IS there anyone that you look forward to painting with,
besides your homeboys.
Detek (A): WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO STER TM???? IDE LOVE TO HIT TAGS WITH THAT NIGGA
FOR SHEEZY>>>>>
Keams (Q): What's the craziest thing you have ever done (doesnt have
to be related to graffiti) andwhat's the craziest spot that you have hit?
Detek (A): It seems like everytime I go out, some fucked up shit goes dowN. Too much to
remember. When I am out bombing, I don’t like ANYONE to see me. Back in 96,
97 and 98, TSC would always be in DOWNTOWN, a lot of shit went down there.
Too much Olde English to remember.. We would get drunk as fuck and then go
bombing. I once had a City of Miami cop look at mewhile I was writing on a
wall, smile, and give me thumbs up! No Lie.<<
Keams (Q): Do you think that the more fame you get, the more people
hate?
Detek (A): Dependz if you give out Postive or negative Vibes. Ive seen kidds get a
lot of fame, and then just catch SO much beef,!?! but I’ve seen others catch
more fame, and not get any beef. Its all how you hold yourself. Or maybe your
unlucky and Bomb on someones fence and he gets really mad. That’s one reason
why I try to stick to bombing city property.
Keams (Q): What do you think are the best things/spot to hit that
run the longest without being buffed?
Detek (A): Bobs Barricades, ..city property, .. theres somethings that you will
never expect to run and it will run for years. So try and bomb everything,
20% of it will probably stick around for longer than a month.
Keams (Q): Have you ever painted legally?? If so, do you enjoy
painting legally or illegally more?
Why?
Detek (A): I have never had the chance to Paint legally, but I am looking forward to it
for sure. (Keams adds... Detek has now painted legally over this past weekend of November 11, 2000 @ the Beyond Extreme graffiti event "Miracle On 34th Street".)
Keams (Q): Have you painted anywhere outside of where you live? Is
so, how is the graff scenes in that
area different from the scene where you live?
Detek (A): Ive painted in Tally, and it is very different there from MIAMI. No illegal
bombing. Besides the fr8 yards, all the graff is legall walls from around the
way.
Keams (Q): Do you have any interesting chase stories?
Detek (A): Umm, I got away from Pinecrest one night, and they let the doggs loose on my
boy Ceve, he got away also. We drove onto the expressway and we thought we
were clean, but then we saw the lights coming from far away, so we pulled off
the exprswy and into an appartment complex and layed low for a little while.
I had Ceves Fucking Mom on my cell phone bitching how she wants her car
back...meanwhile they were being chased by K9.And I wasn’t sure where the
fuck they were. In the end, it was all good. We went home and had the mad
Crippy Session. Fuck the Cops.
Keams (Q): What production do you feel is the "best of the best"?
Is it legal or illegal?
Detek (A): One thing that sticks in my mind, is this old-school illegal production by
Rage, Abomb, and Cer.. It was in the back of Modernage pennent.
And I cant forget the High altitude Legal by Nine and G-Wiz on Coral
Way ...i think the building burned down...
Keams (Q):Do you like to listen to music while on bombing mission, be
specific.
Detek (A): I Usually throw on The 36 chambers.., Juvenile, GraveDiggaz, Kurupt,
Sometimes I like it Quiet though. SHHHHHHH..
Detek hitting them freights in Gainesville.
Keams (Q): What do you have to say for females entering the graff
game? Also, do you have any tips for
the writers just coming into the graff scene?
Detek (A): I don’t think that it goes any different than if you’re a guy. Don’t bite
of course, and be original. And keep all the forms of graff equal...Piecing,
is a must, but so is Bombing. Anyone can practice and be a good bomber, but
it’s the Piecing where all the props are handed out.
As far as females go, More power to ya.
Keams (Q): Name all the members in your crew(s) and state why you
entered that crew, how you got in, what holds you together, and what makes
your crew stand out from the rest ...
Detek (A): I got into the TSC click in 1995..Me Quake and Krash(Tveee) , started
cooling out a lot and they asked me to be in. I saw a lot of potential in the
crew. Plus we were all on the same level, we were into the same thing.
Drinking, graffito, and chilling hard az fuck in Down Town... so I pushed TSC
for a lil while after HA crew, but eventually dropped HA, to focus all my
energy on TSC! I think what holds us together is our strive to be better, and
do more, our love for the game, and the fact that everyone in the crew is
FAMILY. Everyone in TSC is down as fuck with eachother. There isn’t one
leader in the crew, any move that the crew makes, the main niggaz agree on. I
think that keeps The Sick Click together.
Im not sure what makes TSC stand out from the rest. I don’t see it from an
outsiders perspective, so its hard to tell.
Keams (Q): Do you think that graff is addicting? If so why? Also,
what motivates you to do graff?
Detek (A): Graff is absolutly addicting. I am addicted right now. Look at me, im on the
internet doing a graffiti interview , instead of my Homework. Everything I
look at, I look at differently than others. Always scheming on some new hot
spots. What motivates me to do graff is my crew,! And, seeing them making
moves without me, that makes me want to get up too.
Keams (Q): Do u think that bombing these days is just too heated or
do you just say "I dont give a
f**k"? Do u think that its expanding or dieing out?
Detek (A): I say "I don’t give a FUCK!" I am ready to go to jail in the name of
graff. I don’t plan on it all though. Shit. I am not letting the cops catch
me. Bombing is something that HAS TO BE DONE. It is what makes graff,=
graffiti. The scene is deffinetly heated, but untill they have cops staked
out on every corner, with cameras everywhere its not too heated "if someone
says that the streets are too heated too bomb, there giving a sorry ass
excuse." Cant let them win.
Keams (Q): Is it just me or are the police paying way too much
attention to vandalism when they really
should be trying to catch all the murderers, rapists, etc. out there? Expand
on this.
Detek (A): Umm, it seems that there aren’t as many gangs these days as there used to
be. Which is making gang unit bored. They need some excitement, so they fuck
with us. But even then, I don’t think Graffiti gets "that" much attention
from the police.
Keams (Q): If you ever get caught (hopefully you won't), do you
think its better to be straight up
with the cop or to deny it completely?
Detek (A): Fuck that shit, deny it to the end. Its when you admit to it, is when
they want your friends, your crew, your Family etc...The only time I would
admit to it if it was really small, and innocent. Then I might admit to it,
and talk my way out of it.
Keams (Q): What plans do you and your crew(s) have for the future?
Do you see more legals or more
bombing?
Detek (A): YES. A lot more Bombing, illegal pieces as much as possible, along with
throw-ups, and get-ups. I would like the crew to focus on illegal piecing,
but legall peicing is a must because it allows you to focus on backround and
details..when illegal pieces on the streets sorta restrict that. Battling
the Cincinatti TSC is deffinetly in the Plan book. No doubt.
Keams (Q): Where can one go to see your work? (Locations of legals,
etc.)
Detek (A): All the pennents in Miami except the stadium, I havent got there yet.
Like I said I bomb mostly down south. South Miami, Kendall, Cutler Ridge, im
trying to get out of that area though, work my way up to North Miami!
Keams (Q): Do you have any last words of wisdom for all the writers
out there? Any shouts? Any "f**k
you" comments to anyone out there? Any requests?
Detek (A): Shoutouts>> QUAKE ATOMIK DETENATE TVEE TYREKS NME HONER
