Of course you can, babe. Easy. Bad Trip was my first dedicated MUDding exxxperience and the peeps on it made it tres coo for me. I got mad help with starting a character. There are specific help files for newbies and several players who are more than willing to answer a few questions and lend a helping hand.
Yes, there are immortals, and they are absolutely marvelous. They keep the game in check and provide players with prizes like tokens that you can collect to improve your equipment or to gain phat eq that will make everyone jealous of you. Some immortals hold quests where you get to kill spesh mobs like your Condescending Boss, a PokEmon, Happiness, ,or Suicidal Urges. Afterwards, you get rewarded with mad prizes that keep your character bubbly and happy. The immortals also make sure no assholes stay around, cuz they ain't coo. They also hold battlefields so that peeps that chose to be peaceful (as in, not able to kill or be killed by other players) can get a chance to shed some rival blood. It also is cool to come out on top of a ten person battlefield (although I wouldn't know cuz I uh, haven't won one).
Because I have little experience with other MUDs (they bored me too much and frustrated me), I can't really do any comparisons. But I can tell you what I personally love about this MUD. The areas are really fun, I mean, getting to kill smurfs? Busta? lemmings? Travelling in Dante's Inferno? Or a hell where a frantic lady shops in a mall with no stores? It's incredibly creative, funny, and interesting. You can re-name your eq to Poop Face if you want to, you can mosh other players, get healed by jello, wish for favors from the immortals. What I especially love about Bad Trip is that they are open-minded and don't have any room for bullshit. There's a shittalk channel when you need to talk shit, there's bongs and stash and alcohol ready for your consumption, there are private rooms if you need them *wink*... it's really cool to be around peeps that aren't so uptight.
You can be a human, giant, elf, dark elf, dragon, aiel, dwarf, sprite, or mutant. Your character can be a witch, mage, cleric, warrior, thief.
You can have a character that's either peaceful or p-kill. If you are p-kill you are able to battle other characters within your level range. If you choose to be peaceful you don't have this option (except in a battlefield), but your corpse (should you die) will be safe from looting. P-killers have become rather scarce, so try one out and kick some butt. There are also clans, several that focus on roleplaying. You can also get together with other characters and see if ya'll want to get into rp mode as a group.
