MICHIGAN PULLS IT OUT AGAINST 'CUSE

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Sept. 18) -- With every push by the Syracuse offense, there was the Michigan defense ready to answer. The defense set up two field goals with interceptions, came up with a key safety and then turned back a final Syracuse threat as No. 6 Michigan outlasted the Orangemen 18-13 Saturday night. The Orangemen (2-1) looked ready to steal a victory away from Michigan (3-0), driving the length of the field in the final three minutes. Syracuse made it to the Michigan 9, but Madei Williams' fourth-and-4 pass was beyond the reach of diving Pat Woodcock and Michigan took over on downs and ran out the clock.

Jeff Del Verne's 31-yard field goal with 3:42 to play gave Michigan a five-point advantage and put Syracuse in a touchdown-or-nothing situation. With the score 13-all late in the third quarter, Hall and the rest of the Wolverines defense chased Troy Nunes, Syracuse's redshirt freshman quarterback, into his own end zone. Nunes, after dodging defenders and spinning away, tried a long pass but it fell yards away from the nearest Syracuse receiver and the officials flagged him for intentional grounding and a safety that put Michigan ahead 15-13. Whitley added a crucial sack in the fourth quarter that ended a Syracuse drive that had pushed to the Wolverines 30. The Orangemen faked a field goal from 43 yards out, but Michigan's Todd Howard tackled Nunes, the holder, before he could get off a pass.

Despite being dominated by the Wolverines' defense for much of the first half, Syracuse took a short-lived 7-6 lead late in the second quarter when Williams' long pass was caught at the 4 by Woodcock for a 54-yard gain. Two plays later, Williams tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Quinton Spotwood. The nation's leader in turnover margin, Michigan added two more interceptions by Whitley and DeWayne Patmon in the second quarter. Both turnovers led to field goals by Del Verne. The first was from 41 yards, the second a a 24-yarder that gave Michigan a 6-0 lead with eight minutes to play in the half.

Michigan regained the lead in the final minute of the half when Henson caught the Orangemen blitzing and threw a screen pass to fullback Aaron Shea, who ran 22 yards for a touchdown. Syracuse took the ball 80 yards on its opening drive to start the second half with Nunes hitting James Mungro on a 3-yard pass to tie the game at 13-13. Nate Trout's point-after kick was partially blocked by Michigan's James Hall and missed wide. -PROPS TO: William Kates OF THE AP

My Game Notes

Although they gave up big plays, the Michigan defense held off the Orangemen of Syracuse. The sluggish Wolverine offense had few bright spots. One, would be the continued excellence by wideout Dave Terrell. I said before the season that DT was going to be an intergal part of this offense. Terrell hauled in 7 passes racking up 111 yards, and rushed for 15. Tom Brady threw only 10 passes, 5 complete for a pitful 26 yards. Henson played 3+ quarters, led the Wolverines to a 22 yard TD and thre 1 INT. This INT was not a crucial play considering it occured on 3rd and long. It did the same good as a punt. Henson showed his leadership ablility and had a great first half. In the 2nd half however his passes began to sail on him. I would have liked to see Brady back in the 4th quarter

The defense gave up big plays but also made some huge ones as well. James Whitley set up a field goal with an INT in the 2nd quarter on a deep ball from Cuse Qb Nunes. On the next series DeWayne Patmon picked off a deflected pass to the Cuse 27, and another FG was made. In the 3rd Quarter Hall blocked a PAT attempt to keep the score tied. The defense read a FG fake and took over on downs, recorded a safety, and won the game on the 4 yard line. I was glad to see the defense leading the way, even when the offense stalled. Even though A-Train rushed for 97 tough yards, the Wolverines need another back to step up--and Walter Cross did not.

The Wolverines and Henson also need to pass the ball to veteran Marcus Knight to help Terrell carry the load from the WR position. Henson has great arm strength, but needs to work on decision making and consistancy. I feel that the most important play in this game was the safety. The defense showed everyone that they will not be embarassed as Nunes outran them backwards for nearly 20 yards. They finally nailed him and forced a turnover (safety). The Michigan defense, as well as they played, still need to work on wrapping up the players and making sure tackles. Jeff Del-Verne who recieved a scholorship last week has continued his perfection with 3 field goals, all poinyts they need as the Wolverine offense once again struggled to put the ball into the Endzone.
